Trio of local organisations receive boost from McCarthy & Stone

01 September 2017

Three local community groups in the Blairgowrie and Rattray area have each scooped a share of £1,400 as part of this year’s community appeal by local retirement housebuilder, McCarthy and Stone, to recognise the contribution its new Darroch Gate development on Coupar Angus Road continues to make to the local town of Blairgowrie.

The single largest donation of £700 has been awarded to Blairgowrie Freedom Coach – a charity which provides transport for elderly and disabled people in Blairgowrie within a 10 mile radius.  Securing this funding is a real boost to the group as Charlie Bisset from Blairgowrie Freedom Coach says: “On behalf of the Freedom Coach Association I would like to thank McCarthy & Stone at Darroch Gate for their very generous donation to our charity.

"The money will be very useful for the general maintenance of our vehicle. It has an annual major service and MOT.  This year we had to replace all six tyres at considerable expense.  Due to the nature of our work with the elderly and disabled, the coach has to be inspected every 10-12 weeks for VOSA regulations. Also, with its specially adapted rear lift it has to be tested and serviced every six months, so any donations to help keep the Freedom Coach on the road are very much appreciated, both by our committee and by the residents of Blairgowrie who access our service."

Blairgowrie Players, the local drama club with members aged 8 to 80 years old, have secured a donation of £400.  This local registered charity, who stage a popular show every year for the local community, will use their cash to help pay for the refurbishment of their premises.  Ruth Reid, Treasurer says: “The Blairgowrie Players have been fundraising for many years with the intention of renovating our 'home', the old Hill Kirk in Blairgowrie.

“We purchased the property as an empty shell in 1979 and not a great deal of work has been done since then.  It is an expensive building to keep warm and wind/watertight so the renovation pot has built up slowly.

“We are now in a position to work on some areas of the building, but only the 'must haves' as there is no extra cash for the 'nice to have' things.  The additional money received from McCarthy and Stone will allow us to install basic kitchen units and a sink, making it a much more user-friendly and safe area for members who have worked so hard to assist in our fundraising endeavours.”

And finally £300 has been awarded to One Voice Volunteer Group’s Blairgowrie Transport and Isolation Project, which is a new community-based transport service for older people in the Blairgowrie & Rattray area.  This service provides taxi vouchers towards local trips and aims to help people maintain their independence and carry on an active, healthy and happy life in their own home.

Maggie Urquhart of the One Voice Volunteer Group says: “The Transport and Isolation Project is grateful for the donation from McCarthy & Stone towards the new isolation transport project. The donation of £300 will go a long way towards the printing of leaflets and membership forms to enable the service to reach as many vulnerable and isolated people in the community as possible.

“The service is going from strength to strength and proving to be a much needed service in the area of Blairgowrie and Rattray.  The service helps people connect and enables them to get out and about, doing some of the tasks most of us take for granted, such as shopping, going to the hairdressers, socialising and even trips to the doctors or dentists.

“McCarthy & Stone’s community support is very much appreciated.  Anyone interested in using the service or volunteering with the service can make contact by emailing  or calling 07484 925 653.”

Lorraine Paterson, Regional Sales and Marketing Director at McCarthy and Stone Scotland, adds: “As a company, we appreciate that our responsibility is not only to build quality, purpose-built retirement properties, but also to create a positive legacy in the communities in which we build. Each of these three local community groups do such a wonderful job in the area and we’re delighted to be able to donate to such worthy causes.”

Darroch Gate is an attractive development of 36 one and two bedroom Retirement Living apartments.  Facilities at the development include a stunning homeowners’ lounge ideal for catching-up with friends, landscaped gardens and a convenient guest suite should homeowners have friends or relatives to stay.
