Time to love, celebrating 90

15 January 2018

There are many who believe age brings intelligence, experience, wisdom and beauty. One retiree who’s championing this outlook is 93-year-old Mary White, who recently moved into McCarthy and Stone’s leafy Retirement Living Plus development in Sidcup, Sydney Court.

At 93 Mary White is a force of nature; vigorous, wise and ambitious with a keen sense of humour. After her family home was bombed when she was aged 17, Mary realised that "material things do not matter, the most important thing is life, family and friends".

Tired of people moaning about old age and their persistent negativity, Mary wrote ‘Time to love, celebrating 90’. It is a book about her life, how she got through tough times and her refreshing outlook, which to date has sold over 8,000 copies.

Mary’s book was also turned into a nine-episode series and was read out on BBC Radio Norfolk to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Despite Mary’s zest for life and new found fame, when her husband passed away Mary began to feel remote and lonely in her bungalow in Tunbridge Wells. The house, garden, and everyday jobs that she once shared suddenly became too much with which to cope.

After Mary’s daughter spotted Sydney Court online, the pair immediately arranged a visit and were warmly greeted by staff. Designed to offer homeowners the very best in independent living within a safe and secure environment, the development offered the opportunity to benefit from companionship when desired and privacy when needed.  It was just what Mary needed.

Thoughtfully designed to complement the local area, Sydney Court comprises a stylish collection of 50 one and two bedroom Retirement Living Plus apartment. Designed exclusively for the over 70s, the luxury development offers beautiful green views across Waring Park, a stylish club lounge and a dedicated Concierge. Prices at Sydney Court start at £359,950 and £455,950 for a one and two bedroom apartment respectively.

Facilities include a fantastic on-site bistro-style restaurant, a homeowners’ lounge, a relaxing wellbeing suite, a guest suite for family and friends who wish to stay overnight, a lift, and flexible domestic and personalised care packages, which can be tailored to provide varying levels of support according to each individuals’ needs. A dedicated Estates Manager takes care of the smooth running of the development with 24 hour, 365 days a year on-site staffing providing peace-of-mind for homeowners and their families.

Mary said: “Everybody is so friendly here and it’s one of the reasons I moved. I love meeting different people, and I often have to pinch myself in the morning to realise how lucky I am to be enjoying this new life. I’m determined to make the most of every single day!”

The Retirement Living Plus development in Sidcup is located along a quiet leafy street just behind the lovely Waring Park. It’s ideal for those looking for a home away from the hustle and bustle of London, but close to larger towns like Dartford. The development houses 28 one-bedroom apartments and 22 two-bedroom apartments for those over 70.

Not only is Sydney Court a stone’s throw away from Mary’s daughter, its convenient location allows for Mary to enjoy the hobbies she loves most such as visits to the library, walks in the park, writing of course, and painting in watercolour (and she’s even sold a few pictures!).

Understanding the importance of both independence and companionship in later years, McCarthy and Stone organises over 40,000 social activities every year for their homeowners up and down the country with at least three organised activities per development each week.

Mary undoubtedly inspires others to take a positive approach to life every single day, a philosophy that McCarthy and Stone shares.
