Site safety lessons for Hucknall children

10 June 2016

Award-winning retirement developer, McCarthy & Stone, recently welcomed some fresh faces to its site team as little learners from the Hucknall Day Nursery were invited to visit the site of its forthcoming retirement development in Hucknall, Whyburn Court.

The children from the nursery donned hard hats and hi-vis jackets to take a look around the site, where construction is now well underway.  Accompanied by Darren Clarke, Site Manager at the development, the children were taken on a tour of the exciting new Retirement Living development and got to see the site’s diggers and cranes up-close.

The children took part in various construction-related activities, including dressing up in protective clothing, laying a brick, watching a large tower crane pick up beams, and learning about the dangers construction sites pose.

McCarthy & Stone organised the visit as a practical and fun way of engaging with a younger audience to reinforce the importance of being safe on a construction site, and to promote all that is positive about the construction and housebuilding industry.

Kym Shepherd, Deputy Officer-in-Charge at the Hucknall Day Nursery comments: “We all had a fantastic day with the McCarthy & Stone team and the children loved seeing the enormous diggers in action! We’re really grateful to the Site Manager, Darren, for inviting us to come down and to all the team for giving up their time. All the children found it really enjoyable and loved hearing about how the machinery all works. It was informative too, particularly in reinforcing the message about the dangers of playing on building sites.”

Darren adds: “At McCarthy & Stone, health and safety is always at the forefront of all our minds. A number of the children that attend the nursery live close to the site, and it is paramount that they understand how to stay safe in the community. It was wonderful to be able to welcome the youngsters to Whyburn Court to take a look at the machinery and show them how exciting it is to work on a construction site – perhaps it will even act as an incentive for some of them to consider construction as a career when they’re older!”

The development was also named by one of the nursery’s toddlers, Johanna Kiddy, who found inspiration for the name from the river that runs by her house.

The forthcoming development will compromise of 37 one and two bedroom apartments for the over 60s, which are currently available to buy off plan.  McCarthy & Stone’s Retirement Living developments offer homeowners the best of independent living, with the opportunity for companionship as and when they need it.
