Safety is always at the forefront: A hat trick of award wins for McCarthy & Stone at the Building Safety Group Awards, 2017

01 November 2017

The UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, McCarthy & Stone, is celebrating after being awarded three national awards at the Building Safety Group’s (BSG) Health and Safety Awards, including the ‘BSG Technology Award’.

A national celebration of Health and Safety in the workplace, the awards recognise individuals and organisations who consistently demonstrate an exceptional commitment to high standards of safety. BSG members include over 800 companies across 3500 sites, and is the UK’s largest independent construction safety consultant for health, safety and environmental advice.

McCarthy and Stone collected awards across many of its regions, including a BSG Regional Site Manager of the Year award for Gareth Williams of the South West region, and Brendan Sullivan of the West Midlands region for their continuous dedication to improvements in safety. Both won against a strong field of opposition including several hundred site managers from across the whole of the UK, and from all areas of construction.

The developer was also awarded the coveted ‘BSG Technology Award’ for its pioneering work using drones for roof inspection, which has increased site safety by reducing the need for work at height.

The use of drones with cameras has allowed McCarthy & Stone to minutely examine every seam of a roof, as well as other aspects of the building that would otherwise be inaccessible.

The drone is piloted from the ground, and using cloud technology the scanned roof photographs can be available within two hours of the survey.

Ray Kelly, Health and Safety Director for McCarthy & Stone, comments: “The level of detail we are able to obtain through the use of drones is better than we could ever achieve with the naked eye.  By this method, every seam can be inspected without leaving the ground and problem areas magnified to a granular level of detail. It is also an effective cost saver as the cost of the survey is approximately the same as we would have to pay for an inspection report, but without the additional outlay of man-safe systems and roof safety precautions, which we no longer need.”

Commenting on the raft of award wins, Mr Kelly continues: “We are delighted to have been recognised yet again by the BSG awards for our unwavering commitment to health and safety across our developments nationwide.  As our work with drones to remove the need for regular work at height shows, we are continually looking to improve the safety culture within our business, where the safety of our employees and hugely talented site teams remains of the upmost importance.

“We are thrilled to have been recognised as ‘innovators’ in the sector, which compares us not just with other housebuilders, but with our wider peer-group across all areas of construction. It’s a truly fantastic achievement and one we’re very proud of.”

McCarthy & Stone is the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, pioneering the concept of purpose-built, privately owned accommodation. With a c.70% share of the owner-occupied retirement housing market, the company buys land and then builds, sells and manages high-quality retirement developments. It has built and sold more than 54,000 apartments across more than 1,100 developments since 1977.

More than nine out of ten customers would recommend McCarthy and Stone to a friend, ensuring it has received the full Five Star award for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders Federation for 12 years’ running.  McCarthy and Stone is the only UK housebuilder of any size or type to achieve this accolade for 12 years, which is every year the awards have been run.
