Retirement development in Marlborough honours William Canning and the iconic White Horse

26 September 2017

The UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, McCarthy and Stone, is set to launch its new Retirement Living development in Marlborough this November.

Officially announced this week, the developer has decided to name the forthcoming development on Granham Road, Canning Place, in tribute to William Canning, the designer of the iconic Marlborough White Horse which can be seen on Granham Hill.

William Canning, son of Thomas Canning of the Manor house in Ogbourne St.George, was a pupil at Mr Greasley’s academy, and he designed the Marlborough White Horse in 1804. The horse, which is one of many to be seen around Great Britain, but which is actually the smallest of its kind in Wiltshire, was marked out and cut by William, along with other pupils, and cleaned-up every year by the school until 1830.

Kim Caldwell, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone Southern, comments: “William Canning is a well-known figure in the local area for his contribution to the Marlborough White Horse in the 19th century, which still remains in good condition today.  We hope naming our new development in his honour will be widely seen as a fitting tribute.

“McCarthy and Stone is looking forward to becoming an integrated part of the community in Marlborough, and we believe this latest prestigious development will play a real part in helping to bring friends and family together in later life – something we feel is incredibly important and will bring many positive benefits to the area.”

Canning Place is already proving extremely popular amongst local retirees with its enviable location and exclusive facilities. The development, which is currently under construction, will consist of 27 two bedroom apartments, alongside beautiful landscaped gardens and convenient on-site parking.

Aimed exclusively at people aged 60 and over, the development will provide luxury Retirement Living, as well as independence in a safe and secure environment. Set in a prominent location, Canning Place has an array of services and amenities nearby and is located less than 400m from Marlborough High Street.

More than nine out of ten customers would recommend McCarthy and Stone to a friend, ensuring it has received the full Five Star award for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders Federation for 12 years’ running.  McCarthy and Stone is the only UK housebuilder of any size or type to achieve this accolade for 12 years, which is every year the awards have been run.
