Retirement Development in Bingley Honours Local Lock Keeper

03 September 2019

McCarthy and Stone, the UK’s leading developer and manager of retirement communities, has unveiled the name to its upcoming Retirement Living development in Bingley as Whitelock Grange.

The developer has chosen to name the site on Keighley Road in tribute to former local lock keeper Barry Whitelock. Joining the British Waterways in 1978, Whitelock went on to be based at the Five Rise Lock in Bingley – the steepest flight of locks in the UK – a position he held for around 30 years. Whitelock was awarded an MBE in the 2007 New Year Honours List for “Services to Inland Waterways in the North”, and he eventually retired in 2017 as the country’s longest serving lock keeper.

Barry Whitelock commented: “I’m honoured that McCarthy and Stone has chosen to name its Bingley development after me. I’ve loved working on the locks over the years and never expected I would receive this kind of recognition. I’ve been lucky to have done something I love for my career and had the chance to meet so many amazing people. I wish all the future homeowners at Whitelock Grange the very best and hope they join me in having a very happy retirement!”

Liz Green, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone North East, added: “Barry Whitelock has been a constant figure in the Bingley community for more than 30 years, operating an essential section of the Liverpool-Leeds canal to ensure narrow boats can safely pass through the Five Rise Lock while sharing his passion for the waterways. Having been such a presence with local residents and passers-by alike, we felt it was a fitting tribute to name our Bingley development in honour of Mr Whitelock.

“We are looking forward to becoming an integrated part of the Bingley community, and we believe that our development will play a real part in helping to bring friends and family together in later life, something we feel is important and will bring lots of positive benefits to the area.”

Whitelock Grange will feature a homeowners’ lounge, ideal for enjoying a catch-up with friends and neighbours; beautifully landscaped gardens, which will be fully maintained by McCarthy and Stone’s expert team; and a guest suite, available for when family members and friends come to stay.

All of the apartments will be fitted-out to the highest specification including a modern kitchen with integrated appliances, spacious and open-plan living areas, and stylish en-suite bathrooms. For added peace-of-mind, a House Manager will be on hand to take care of the smooth-running of the development, as well as a 24 hour emergency call system should assistance be needed day or night.

Located in the traditional market town of Bingley, Whitelock Grange is ideal for retirees looking for scenic accommodation in the foothills of the Yorkshire Dales. Renowned for its warm Yorkshire hospitality, Bingley is home to a welcoming and friendly community, with a range of amenities located within walking distance of the development to enjoy a full and active retirement.

More than nine out of ten customers would recommend McCarthy and Stone to a friend, ensuring it has received the full Five Star award for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders Federation for 14 years’ running. McCarthy and Stone is the only UK housebuilder of any size or type to achieve this accolade for 14 years, which is every year the awards have been run.
