Retirees in Minehead enjoy the golden age

01 October 2015

One of the many benefits of retirement is the time it provides to rediscover old interests, as well as exploring new ones.  This couldn’t be more true for McCarthy and Stone homeowners Terry and Hilary Kane, who are making the most of their new life at McCarthy and Stone’s Beechfield Court development in Minehead.

The couple, originally from Manchester, relocated to the area in May.  After spending many years holidaying in Minehead, Terry and Hilary stumbled across Beechfield Court during a walk through the Minehead National Park and decided it was time to downsize from their four bedroom house in the Forest of Dean.  The couple now look over the same park from the windows in their new apartment.

Terry, 74, comments:

“We bought a holiday home 12 years ago in Minehead as the area is such a lovely place to come and relax. We loved spending time here, so we began to keep an eye out for retirement apartments. Having heard good things about McCarthy and Stone, we were excited to come across a development in an area we already felt so at home in, as it made the move here a lot less daunting.  It also allowed Hilary to get straight back into all the hobbies she enjoys doing as she already knew where to go!”

Hilary, 71, is part of the local bowls club and enjoys keeping active at aqua aerobics classes. She comments:

“A big part of my life involves getting out and about, and I really enjoy all the local activities there are in Minehead.  Plus, as we now have the National Park and beautiful beaches right on our doorstop, we are only ever a short stroll away from stunning views and blissful walks.”

After playing professional football in South Africa and Zimbabwe in the 1960s, Terry is also looking to keep active and get stuck back into the game he loves.  Having previously coached younger teams, he is hoping to get back into helping youngsters trying to get into professional football.

Terry comments:

“Football has always been such a huge part of my life and I want to carry on with it for as long as possible!”

It’s not just activities outside of the development that are keeping Terry and Hilary busy.  Since moving to Beechfield Court, they have become regulars at the weekly social events put on by the development’s social committee, including cheese and wine evenings, and fish and chip nights.

Terry explains:

“Coming to a development with such a fruitful social scene has been absolutely wonderful.  It’s great to be among like-minded people from all walks of life, and we had absolutely no problem integrating into the community as everyone was so lovely and welcoming!”

Next on the social calendar for Terry and Hilary will be a winter spent in Portugal to escape the cold British weather.

Terry comments:

“We go to Portugal every year around this time to get ourselves some winter sun.  This year will be the first time we’ve gone away whilst living in our new apartment and we are not in the slightest bit worried about leaving it behind. We feel very safe here and all the security systems in place have put our minds at ease.  It’s also wonderful that we won’t have to worry about any maintenance issues whilst we’re away - it’ll be the first time I’ve not been concerned about the pipes freezing whilst we’re lying in the sun!”

Exclusively for the over 60s, the collection of 25 apartments at Beechfield Court have been carefully designed to offer homeowners the very best in independent living within a safe and secure environment, and with the opportunity to benefit from companionship when homeowners desire, as well as privacy when needed.

Surrounded by stunning countryside and coastlines, Minehead offers an abundance of tranquil settings as well as an array of shops and amenities all within a short walking distance of Beechfield Court.  It is also well serviced by transport links with good bus services to other towns and areas such as Bridgwater, Tiverton and Taunton and is home to the longest heritage railway in Britain.
