Residents to help shape retirement accommodation proposals in Hertford

16 October 2015

McCarthy and Stone, the UK’s leading retirement house builder, is preparing proposals to redevelop Sovereign House on Gascoyne Way with high-quality Assisted Living (Extra Care) and Retirement Living apartments and is currently inviting feedback from local residents on the plans through a public exhibition.

The public exhibition is taking place:

On: Thursday 22nd October 2015

Between: 3pm and 7pm

At: The Mill Bridge Rooms, The Wash, Hertford, Hertfordshire, SG14 1PX

Ali Maruf, Regional Managing Director for McCarthy and Stone (North London Region) said:

“This is a great opportunity to obtain feedback on our scheme so that we can ensure that it will complement Hertford’s character. Our plans will improve local housing choice and deliver a high-quality, attractive development that will allow people to retain independence and fulfilment during their retirement in a safe environment.”
The proposal site is ideally located for older person’s accommodation, being a short walk to local shops, services and transport options. McCarthy and Stone believe the redevelopment of the site offers an important opportunity to provide much needed specialist accommodation in Hertford.

In 2013 a third party developer received planning permission to redevelop the site with 84 open market apartments and McCarthy and Stone is now looking to bring forward new plans which follow closely the design and layout of the existing consent.

Assisted Living (Extra Care) apartments are specifically designed to cater for the needs of the elderly who have increasing problems of mobility/frailty and feature a high specification of shared facilities and features that allow older people to continue to live independently in their own homes. These include access to an on-site care team 24 hours a day, a restaurant and dining room offering a cooked meal 365 days a year as well as guest accommodation.

Retirement Living apartments are aimed at retired people without significant care needs and offer the independence of retaining home ownership while living in an apartment specifically designed for later life. These developments include a residents’ lounge, a House Manager, guest accommodation and a secure entry system. These apartments enable older people to remain living in the community and out of institutions whilst enjoying peace of mind and receiving the care and support that they need.

McCarthy and Stone is committed to engaging with the local community ahead of submitting a planning application.
