Residents to help shape proposals to improve Calne’s local economy
23 November 2015
McCarthy & Stone, the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, is in the early stages of preparing plans to transform a brownfield site with a much-needed Retirement Living scheme at 83 The Pippin’ in Calne, Wiltshire.
This brownfield site offers an ideal location for specialist housing for people in later life. The land is located conveniently in the town centre, allowing future residents to access popular local facilities and independent shops. Accessed from The Pippin, the development will feature undercroft car parking and dedicated pedestrian access.
McCarthy & Stone is committed to engaging with the local community and wants to discuss its proposals. A public exhibition will therefore take place on Monday 30 November at Calne Town Hall, The Strand, Calne, SN11 0EN between 3pm - 7pm.
Shane Paull, McCarthy & Stone’s Regional Managing Director, said:
“We will be displaying our plans at the exhibition and want to hear from the local community before we submit a planning application. Our project team will be at the exhibition to answer questions and listen to feedback on what we have done so far and the comments we receive will help us tailor our proposals.”
“Following early meetings with residents and stakeholders, we understand local feelings about the development of the town centre and residential development in particular. We know from independent research that our proposals will help to attract more retail activity to Calne in the long run, with McCarthy & Stone residents on average spending £670,000 per year within the local economy.”
Research conducted by the Institute of Public Care shows that 78% of owners of this type of property use local shops (on average) at least once a week and have a lower rate of car ownership than more conventional forms of development. Given previous experience on other sites, the majority of people who buy a McCarthy & Stone property in Calne will be residents already living in the local area, and contribute to the release of larger, family sized homes back into the local housing market.
McCarthy & Stone is renowned for the quality of its developments, which give homeowners the time and opportunity to do things they have always wanted to do. The apartments allow people in later life to retain their independence and stay close to their family and friends in a home suited specifically to their needs.
