Peterborough retiree says downsizing has allowed her to feel more like her old self again

26 April 2019

Peterborough retiree, Teresa Church (82), is enjoying her retirement to the full having made the decision to downsize to McCarthy Stone’s Cranberry Court development on Kempley Close.

Having lived in Peterborough her whole life, Teresa was keen to stay in the area so she could be close to her family including sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Teresa previously worked as a cook manager before embarking on a career in property management with her long-term partner of 41 years, John.

After John passed away a few years ago, Teresa decided that downsizing was the best option for her retirement, as the maintenance of her large four bedroom home was becoming too expensive and too much of a burden. Teresa commented: “Now I’m here, I’m so much more relaxed, with less maintenance worries that comes with the upkeep of a large garden and property, I have more time and money to do the things I enjoy.

“Since moving to Cranberry Court it has been like starting a whole new chapter of my life that’s just for me. Living here you’re no longer thought of as someone’s wife, someone’s mother, someone’s employee – it’s a chance to be yourself. I’m enjoying ‘me time’ again”

McCarthy Stone’s Retirement Living developments are designed to offer the over 60s the very best in independent living within a safe and secure environment, with the opportunity to benefit from companionship when they want it and privacy when needed.

“There are lots of events here at Cranberry Court that I love attending”, Teresa continued. “We have weekly coffee mornings which are always really busy, and it’s great to socialise with other homeowners who are all in the same stage of life. We even hosted a ‘house warming’ party when we all moved in and invited friends and family over for a sing-song on the karaoke – it was a great night!”

The shared lounge at Cranberry Court is perfect for socialising with new neighbours and homeowners can make the most of beautiful landscaped gardens knowing all the maintenance is taken care of.  They can also feel secure in the knowledge that the House Manager is on hand to provide any help or support should they need it.

“The community aspect of life at McCarthy Stone was very appealing to me, all of the fellow homeowners at Cranberry Court are very friendly and happy to chat. I have the perfect balance of a private life and a social life, and I’ve made lots of fantastic new friends here. I cannot emphasise enough how helpful the House Manager, Gwen Tack has been – she’s truly unique!”

When asked what advice she would offer other retirees, Teresa said: “This is the life you want. If you put yourself out there and even just have a viewing of a Retirement Living development like McCarthy Stone’s Cranberry Court you will see the benefits. The best part is knowing there’s always someone there to talk to. At McCarthy Stone you’re not just cared for, you’re cared about.”

Cheryl Bissett, Regional Sales and Marketing Director at McCarthy Stone East Midlands, said: “It gives us such great satisfaction when we see homeowners such as Teresa settle in to their new lifestyle so quickly. Teresa is clearly making the most of all the opportunities at Cranberry Court, from involving herself with the social events to having the confidence to continue to enjoy new adventures, we are thrilled that she is able to get so much out of her retirement.”
