Pedalling the way to a happy retirement

17 July 2017

For Martin (65) and Marion (61) Irving from Stamford Bridge, the key to a happy marriage and indeed a happy and active retirement isn’t having his and hers TV remotes, or not going to bed on an argument, but riding in perfect harmony on their tandem bike!

“We love to go on adventures together and see where we end up”, says Martin.

“We know that four legs are better than two and it’s a great way to keep fit but also to enjoy some uninterrupted time together just to chat. There’s nothing better than the shared accomplishment you feel after being out on the bike for a long period of time – it’s amazing the things you can discover and some of the beautiful places it can take you.

“You’re never too old to try something new I always say, so I would encourage any retired couples or friends to give it a go. We’ve had our bike for over 10 years now and it’s one of the best things we’ve ever done!”

Having recently moved to a brand new apartment at McCarthy and Stone’s Lifestyle Living development, Sovereign Court on Low Catton Road in Stamford Bridge, the couple have been able to enjoy even more of the cycling they love, going out up to three times a week.

Marion, comments: “Not having the burden and upkeep of our family home has given us back so much free time to spend on the things we really enjoy. By downsizing we now have more time to spend on ourselves, and are enjoying an active social life with likeminded people just like us, trying lots of different activities we’ve never had the time to before.”

“We were attracted to the development because of its beautiful rural setting, which was perfect for our love of spending time outdoors. The development runs alongside the infamous Sustrans Route 66 of the National Cycle Network, which we can often be found cycling along!”

Since moving to Stamford Bridge the couple have made the most of what the village has to offer, and have started going to weekly community exercise classes and swimming groups, to help keep fit and active.

The couple, who had lived in Dunnington for thirty-five years felt it was time to make the move after Martin’s health deteriorated, and it had made them reconsider their retirement options.

Martin comments: “We had looked at a variety of options for a retirement property, including demolishing our own house and redeveloping the land. We had begun looking at the pre-planning application, but after my heart attack it made us realise that life is too short, and we wanted an instant solution, which is why we were delighted when we saw the McCarthy and Stone development in Stamford Bridge.”

The couple, who were the first homeowners at Sovereign Court, describe their first couple of weeks at the development as a ‘blissful holiday’ and instantly felt settled in their new home right away. There is a close-knit, growing community at the development, with homeowners regularly getting together for a natter over afternoon tea, and trips to the local pub, with the Sovereign Court quiz team winning in the first week!

Never ones to sit still for long, Martin and Marion are also keen travellers, having enjoyed annual skiing holidays for over 30 years, and numerous and frequent visits to Australia. The couple have made life-long friends through travelling and a number of house exchanges, recently welcoming friends from Australia on their first trip to the UK.

Martin comments: “Travelling has always been a big part of our lives, and we’ve made many friends over the years. We had a lovely time travelling around the UK with our Australian friends, and had the perfect excuse to do all of the ‘touristy’ attractions Yorkshire has to offer. The development offers us the peace of mind of being able to leave the apartment for holidays or days out without having to worry about security, which is an invaluable benefit of Lifestyle Living, and we feel very safe here at Sovereign Court.”

Liz Green, Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone North East, commented: "It's an incredibly rewarding part of our job when we hear how happy our homeowners are, so it's great to hear that Martin and Marion are enjoying their new lifestyle at Sovereign Court.  McCarthy and Stone helps retirees to spend more time doing the things they enjoy and Martin and Marion certainly demonstrate this with their tandem cycling and many holidays! For those people who like to lead an active life and travel, Lifestyle Living is the perfect solution. It offers the independence of home ownership combined with the peace of mind of additional security and knowing all the external maintenance is taken care of by an expert team, leaving them more time to spend on the things they enjoy.”

Sovereign Court consists of 24 luxury one and two bedroom apartments, each with intelligently designed modern interiors and spacious master bedrooms with en-suites.
