McCarthy and Stone welcomes man's best friend at Lewsey Court

19 October 2015

Research shows that there are huge physical and emotional benefits to keeping a pet,* and this is couldn’t be more true for retirees, where it has been proven to lift depression and reduce loneliness. Nevertheless, every year hundreds of over 60s are forced to give up their pets as many retirement complexes have a strict ‘no-pets’ policy.

However, this is far from the case at McCarthy and Stone’s latest Retirement Living development in Tetbury, Lewsey Court, where they recently welcomed their newest four-legged friend, Jess.

Jacky Birthistle, 76, moved to Lewsey Court earlier this year, and refused to consider leaving her beloved Greyhound, Jess, behind. Jacky explains: “After a lifetime in West Wales, I relocated to Tetbury after my three storey family home started to become unmanageable. It was important to me to find somewhere that was comfortable and had plenty going on in the local area to get involved with. As I live alone, and the majority of my family based abroad, I wanted to be part of a community of like-minded people, but still enjoy the same independence I’d always had.”

However, it wasn’t just her own needs that Jacky had to consider when making the move, as she had one very important family member to think about – Jess.  Jacky continues: “I looked at various retirement apartments in the area, but none of them allowed pets, so I kept coming to a dead end. I couldn’t bear to leave my Jess behind! Set in the Cotswolds, Lewsey Court just seemed perfect – lovely and peaceful and with plenty of walks for Jess, and a fantastic selection of shops and markets to keep me busy.

“The prospect of making new friends was another real draw to McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living development – they’re real communities and you truly feel part of something. The apartments are all very modern with state-of-the-art kitchens, beautiful gardens and all the delicate finishing touches you would to expect.

“I came with my friend to one of the open days to have a look around, and I instantly felt at home. It I was delighted when McCarthy and Stone told me that Jess could come too. It fully confirmed my decision to buy and since then I haven’t looked back. Everyday I’m making new friends, trying new things and just recently I took up swimming at the local pool in Cirencester.

“Jess has settled in brilliantly and adapted incredibly well. She’s so quiet you would barely know she’s there half the time. She was by my side as I negotiated the packing and unpacking– it wouldn’t have felt like home without her.  She’s hugely popular with all my neighbours who love to come and say hello and give her a pet.  Plus, she gives me a reason to go out and stay active –she’s an ex-racing dog so she needs up to four walks a day!”

Exclusively for the over 60s, the collection of 38 apartments on London Road have been carefully designed to offer homeowners the very best in independent living within a safe and secure environment, and with the opportunity to benefit from companionship when homeowners want it, and privacy when they need.

Debby Pavitt, Regional Sales and Marketing Director at McCarthy and Stone South West, comments:  "It's an incredibly rewarding part of our job when we hear how happy our homeowners are, so it's great that both Jacky and Jess are settling in so well to life at Lewsey Court. Retirement Living is the perfect solution for people like Jacky as it offers the independence of home ownership, but with all the maintenance taken care of – all the more time to spend socialising, keeping active, and really making the most of retirement."

Facilities at Lewsey Court include a stunning homeowner’s lounge ideal for socialising with friends, beautifully landscaped gardens in which to relax and a convenient guest suite should homeowners have friends or relatives to stay. The development also benefits from its very own House Manager, who will ensure the smooth running of the development, a security entrance system, plus 24-hour emergency call points for added peace of mind for both homeowners and their families.
