McCarthy and Stone Honours Television Storyteller with Development Naming

18 June 2019

McCarthy and Stone, the UK’s leading developer and manager of retirement communities, has announced its new Retirement Living development on Woburn Road in Ampthill has been named Clemens Place in honour of Brian Clemens OBE, the television scriptwriter who created two ITV cult series, The Avengers and The Professionals.

A Bedfordshire scriptwriter, Brian Clemens became one of television’s most inventive and prolific story tellers. As well as being the script editor,  producer and main scriptwriter for The Avengers TV series, he also created, wrote and produced “The Professionals” TV Series and worked on a variety of television series throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including Adam Adamant Lives!, The Baron, The Persuaders and The Protectors.

Clemens created the BBC TV sitcom, My Wife Next Door, which won a BAFTA for best situation comedy series. He also wrote many film scripts including “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad”, “See No Evil” starring Mia Farrow, “Watcher In The Woods” starring Bette Davis. He also wrote many plays for the theatre, which are still being performed all over the world.

Simon Pendlebury, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone North London, said: “We wanted to choose a name for our new Ampthill development that is not only meaningful, but would also resonate with local people and future McCarthy and Stone homeowners. Our chosen name, Clemens Place, recognises and celebrates Brian Clemens OBE – and his talent and commitment to scriptwriting and television.”

Janet Clemens, wife of the late Brian Clemens said: “Our family were delighted when we heard the news that the new development will be called Clemens Place. Brian was a long-time resident of the town having moved to Ampthill in 1966. His film Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter, which he wrote and directed for Hammer Films was filmed in 1973 and Ampthill Park was the background for several of the scenes. I’m sure he would be so pleased that his name would be remembered in this way, and we’re looking forward to see Clemens Place progress over the coming months.”

Comprising a collection of luxury Retirement Living apartments for the over 60s, Clemens Place will offer retirees the opportunity to downsize and maintain an active, independent lifestyle, surrounded by like-minded individuals.
The development will feature a club lounge; ideal for socialising with friends; landscaped gardens in which to relax; and a comfortable guest suite, should homeowners have friends or relatives to stay.  A dedicated House Manager will take care of the day-to-day running of the development; while a secure entry system and 24-hour emergency call points will provide added peace-of-mind.

A Discovery Day will be held for Clemens Place in Winter 2019 and first homeowners are expected in Summer 2020.
Located within the lively community of Ampthill, future homeowners can take advantage of Ampthill’s weekly market (a law passed by Henry III), as well as nearby Ampthill Park. For those who enjoy travelling future afield, Bedford and Milton Keynes are only a short journey away from the town.

More than 90% of customers would recommend McCarthy and Stone to a friend, ensuring it has received the maximum Five Star award for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders’ Federation for 14 years running.  It is the only UK housebuilder of any size or type to achieve a Five Star award for every year of the HBF’s awards.
