McCarthy and Stone, the housebuilder behind the new landmark Retirement Living and Retirement Living PLUS developments in Southsea, has given local organisation, Portsea Men’s Shed, a welcome boost with a £500 donation.

Portsea Men’s Shed is a charitable organisation which relies on donations to run its vital support services within the community. As part of Southern Men’s Shed Network, Portsea Men’s Shed provides a supportive and friendly setting where men can socialise, learn new skills and hone existing skills; which helps to combat loneliness, and improve the health and wellbeing of members.

The Portsea Men’s Shed group, which started in 2013, meets three times a week at St Georges Church to work on a range of exciting projects and to discuss opportunities to help the local community. One of the groups’ most recent community projects involved building shelving units for The Moving on Project Portsmouth (MOPP), a newly launched organisation helping homeless people within the local community.

McCarthy and Stone Area Sales Manager, Nina Fitzgerald, attended Portsea Men’s Shed group at St. George’s Church to present the charity with a cheque for £500.

Jim Steele, who helps run the Portsea Men’s Shed group, said: “We are delighted to receive this kind donation and gesture of support from McCarthy and Stone. We are a charitable organisation and donations of this kind are extremely important to us in helping to maintain the group. The lease on our premises comes to an end next year and these funds will go towards renting new premises, which will hopefully be bigger to help us cater for more members and projects.”

Georgina Akers, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone South East, added: “As a company we appreciate our responsibilities go further than building quality retirement apartments, and we also seek to create a positive legacy in the communities in which we build.

“When we were looking for a charity in the Portsmouth area to support, Portsea Men’s Shed stood out for the health and wellbeing benefits it provides, helping to combat loneliness and isolation among men in the community. As a developer which strives to enrich the lives of retires through the opportunity to enjoy an independent retirement surrounded by like-minded individuals, it was our absolute pleasure to present this donation to such a deserving charity.  We wish them every success with their ongoing contribution to the community.”
