McCarthy & Stone staff take to the saddle and raise over £5000 for Royal Voluntary Service

25 September 2017

McCarthy and Stone’s South West team took to the saddle last week to take part in a gruelling 210 mile bike ride across the region, raising more than £5,000 for the older people’s charity, Royal Voluntary Service.

A total of seven cyclists, including four staff members from the McCarthy and Stone South West team, cycled across the region, starting in Carlyon Bay on Friday 15th September.  Over the course of three days, the peloton stopped off at a number of McCarthy and Stone developments, including Lock House in Taunton, and Cheswick Court in Bristol, where colleagues and family provided enthusiastic support.

Friends and family were invited to join the team as it rode through Nailsea, on the popular Festival Way cycle track, before it crossed the finish line in Abergavenny on Saturday 17th September.

Speaking of the challenge, Simon Gait, Land Director at McCarthy and Stone South West, commented: “Across the three days we saw all four seasons, with bright sunshine one minute to torrential rain the next. The terrain was difficult in parts, especially from Cornwall to South Molton, but it was a great challenge and was made much easier by receiving a warm welcome from our homeowners every day. It was great to see the difference it makes to homeowners' lives living in a McCarthy and Stone development, and I hope the money raised for the Royal Voluntary Service will help support projects across the country.”

This special fundraising event was part of ongoing continued celebrations for the retirement housebuilder’s 40th anniversary. In 1977, McCarthy and Stone opened its very first retirement development, paving the way for the creation of an entirely new sector of the property market. To honour this important milestone, the award-winning housebuilder has partnered with Royal Voluntary Service this year, with the aim of raising over £130,000 in support of projects across the South West and the rest of the country.

Since the beginning of the year, McCarthy and Stone developments across the South West have been busy hosting fundraising events such as Vintage Tea Parties and Summer Garden Parties, and six staff members recently took to the skies to take part in a sky dive, descending from 14,000ft.

Simon Mantell, Regional Managing Director for McCarthy and Stone South West, said: “I would like to congratulate the McCarthy and Stone South West team for completing such a gruelling cycling challenge, and our sincere thanks go to everyone who sponsored them. This huge effort raised a fantastic amount for Royal Voluntary Service and helps us on our way to our fundraising target.  40 years is an incredible achievement for McCarthy and Stone. We believe this is testimony to the quality and attention to detail that goes into the service we provide across all of our developments.”

McCarthy and Stone’s South West region currently has a portfolio of 17 developments selling or under construction. Due to its ongoing growth and expansion, it is gearing up to launch ten new developments next year. Each individual development will be carefully designed to suit the requirements of older people, offering homeowners the very best in independent living within a safe and secure environment.
