Local centenarian helps kick off Eastbourne Pier’s 150th anniversary celebrations

04 May 2016

John Denerley, homeowner at McCarthy and Stone’s Martello Court, was joined by Eastbourne locals and dignitaries to officially commemorate the piers 150th anniversary on Saturday 23rd April 2016. Built in 1870’s and located on the Eastbourne sea front, the pier suffered significant damage in 2014 due to a fire and has recently been reopened.

Julie Ward, Regional Sales and Marketing Director at McCarthy and Stone South East, said: “As a company we are keen to ensure that the local history of the towns in which we build in are not forgotten. The pier is a very important landmark in Eastbourne so it was great that one of our homeowners was invited to take part in these special celebrations. John has many fond memories of the pier, and so it seems fitting that he was asked to help commemorate the 150th anniversary.”

Caroline Ansell, Eastbourne MP, commented: “Less than two years ago our beautiful pier was engulfed in flames and there were real fears the much loved iconic structure could have been consigned to history, so it’s wonderful I able was to stand there to commemorate its 150th anniversary and talk about its future. It was also an absolute pleasure to meet Mr John Denerley, and to hear a little bit about his life. What a wonderful gentleman. I’m glad he enjoyed the occasion so much”.
