Lights, camera, action! Retirement development in Borehamwood honours MGM film studio

13 November 2017

The UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, McCarthy and Stone, has announced its Borehamwood Retirement Living Plus development will launch in early 2018; and it has today revealed the name of the forthcoming development on Studio Way has been chosen as a tribute to the world-renowned Metro-Goldwyn-Mayor (MGM) Film Studios.

Originally established at Denham Film Studios in 1936, MGM acquired the Borehamwood site during the Second World War (1944). They continued their film success on Studio Way until the site was closed in 1970. Rivalling tinsel town, MGM had plenty of ‘lights, camera, action’, producing legendary films such as Ivanhoe (1952), The Dirty Dozen (1967) and 2001: Space Odyssey (1968).

This ‘British Hollywood’ site will soon be home to new stars, with McCarthy and Stone’s Goldwyn House Retirement Living Plus development now under construction; and a CGI has also been released to give local people their first look at how it will look when complete.

Exclusively designed for the over 70s, Goldwyn House will feature a range of one and two bedroom apartments. The development will be set alongside beautiful landscaped gardens and will have convenient on-site parking. Facilities will include a Club Lounge, ideal for socialising with friends, and a guest suite for when visitors wish to stay over.

An Estates Manager will take care of the day-to-day running of the development; and 24-hour emergency call points will provide added peace-of-mind and security. For those with limited mobility, there will be lift access to every floor, as well as wheelchair accessibility; and tailored domestic assistance packages will also be available.

Stephen Rolt, Sales and Marketing Director at McCarthy and Stone North London, comments: “Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Borehamwood was a hive of activity.  We thought it would make a fitting tribute to name our new development after the film and television studios, as we also hope Goldwyn House will prove to be an integral part of the Borehamwood community. With the construction of the development underway, we are looking forward to the launch of Goldwyn House in early 2018.

“We appreciate that our responsibility is not only to increase the provision of high quality purpose-built age-exclusive properties, but also to create a positive legacy in the communities where we build. We hope the legacy of the MGM Film Studio will live-on in this impressive new development.”
