Less house: more home. Lifelong friends mirror move to McCarthy & Stone

16 August 2017

They say the sign of true friendship is going through every step of life together. This couldn’t be truer for 64 year old Jean Ryder and married couple Cecilia and Jim Smith, who each bought a new apartment at McCarthy and Stone Retirement Living developments within four days of each other.

Companions from the age of 14 when they worked together at the local hairdressers, Jean and Cecilia have shared plenty of advice over their 50 years of friendship. They never imagined this advice would lead to new homes for the pair.

Talking about how they all came to make the move to a McCarthy and Stone development, Jean said: “I asked Cecilia and Jim to take a look at Grove Court in Crosby with me, as I think highly of their opinion. I knew it was time to downsize to somewhere with less maintenance worries. I didn’t expect them to buy their own apartment at Charlotte Court in Ainsdale four days later!”

“Looking at Grove Court with Jean was almost like a light bulb moment for me and Jim, we realised it was all we wanted and more”, Cecilia explained. “It showed us an easier side to life which was perfect for us, and seeing the beautiful apartments at Grove Court inspired us to take a look for ourselves”.

“We visited Charlotte Court in Ainsdale the next day as we wanted to move a bit further afield. It’s a beautiful village and we picked our apartment straight away, and it was exactly what we wanted. We then put our house up for sale, and it sold within two and a half days. It was a whirlwind week – but it was the best decision we have ever made!”

Making the most of McCarthy and Stone’s Refer A Friend scheme, where homeowners and friends are given up to £1,000 as a thank you for recommending, Jean, Cecilia and Jim were rewarded £1,000 each to spend as they wish. When asked how they’d like to spend the money, both ladies said, “A holiday for all three of us, to celebrate our unbreakable bond and long friendship!”

McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living developments are designed to offer homeowners the very best in independent living within a safe and secure environment, with the opportunity to benefit from companionship when desired and privacy when needed.

Talking about her move to Grove Court, Jean said: “I feel much safer here than I did at my previous home. My family are still close by and I have the peace-of mind of knowing everything is taken care of. I have made a wealth of new friends here as well as maintaining my close friendship with Cecilia and Jim. Everyone is so lovely and sociable. My biggest highlight was being able to bring my cat, Butters, to live with me. It was the icing on the cake for the perfect move.”

Understanding the importance of companionship in later years McCarthy and Stone organises over 40,000 social activities every year for their homeowners up and down the country, with at least three organised activities per development each week.

Talking about the activities at Grove Court, Jean said; “I recently attended a fantastic Garden Party, and the weekly coffee mornings are a perfect excuse to get together with all the homeowners. You can be involved as much or as little as you like.”

Cecilia continued: “There is so much opportunity to make new friends. Alongside the coffee mornings at Charlotte Court, we’ve had dancing events, St Patricks Day celebrations, and so much more. We often visit each other’s developments to get involved and to support each other in our new homes.”

Facilities at Grove Court in Crosby and Charlotte Court in Ainsdale include a Homeowners’ Lounge, ideal for socialising with friends, beautifully landscaped gardens in which to relax, and a convenient guest suite should homeowners have friends or relatives to stay. A dedicated House Manager takes care of the smooth day-to-day running of the development; and a security entrance system and 24 emergency call points provide added peace-of-mind.

Regional Sales and Marketing Director at McCarthy and Stone North West, Fiona Brooks, said: “It gives us great pleasure when homeowners like Jean, Cecilia and Jim not only maintain a fantastic friendship, but develop it further with the help of McCarthy and Stone. We’re so pleased that Grove Court made such an impression on Cecilia and Jim that they decided to take a look at Charlotte Court and downsize for an easy and relaxing retirement. We hope the three of them continue to enjoy their new lives and homes at McCarthy and Stone."
