McCarthy & Stone donated 500 high visibility reflective armbands for the children at Juniper Green School

With the days drawing in and the evenings getting darker, retirement developer McCarthy & Stone has joined forces with Juniper Green Primary School in Edinburgh to help keep its pupils seen and safe on their walk to and from school this winter.

To make the pupils more visible to passing motorists in busy rush hour conditions, the developer, which is currently building a complex of 45 Retirement Living apartments on nearby Baberton Avenue, has donated 500 high visibility reflective armbands to spread the message "Be Seen, Stay Safe!"

Suzanne McElhiney, marketing manager for McCarthy & Stone in Scotland, explained:
"The figures for road collisions where pedestrians are killed or injured are always notably higher in the weeks following the clocks going back but we believe that this is something that can be addressed, if only in a small way, by educating children to stay visible and safe."

Head teacher from Juniper Green Primary School, Mrs Noble agreed, adding:
"We want our pupils to be able to enjoy active and full lives outside of classroom hours, and walking to and from school is an excellent way to get fresh air and exercise in the great outdoors. However, the dangers of walking alongside roads during the winter months are very real so we are keen to promote safety wherever we can. McCarthy & Stone’s donation is very much appreciated and we hope that the wrist bands will help our pupils to stand out and be seen."

McCarthy & Stone’s Later Living development is currently under construction on Baberton Avenue.

Its Later Living developments offer the independence of retaining home ownership while living in an apartment specifically designed for later life. Facilities include a shared lounge, guest suite, laundry room and a lift. A dedicated house manager ensures the smooth running of the development and a security entrance system plus 24-hour emergency call points provide peace of mind for both residents and their families. All properties are low maintenance and energy efficient.

In addition to offering age exclusive apartments, the retirement developer also provides a range of financial services, including a pension annuity service, equity release, legal services and guaranteed funeral plans.
