Grandmaker inspires at Poundbury crafts event

10 July 2017

Locals in Poundbury took the opportunity to learn a new skill or to brush up on their own abilities at a special traditional crafts event held this week at McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living PLUS development, Bowes Lyon Court in Bowes Lyon Place.

As part of its 40th anniversary celebrations, the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, McCarthy and Stone, has pledged its support for Royal Voluntary Service.  Inspired by the charity’s annual ‘GrandFest’ event, which puts the spotlight on the heritage skills older people have to share, McCarthy and Stone invited 73 year-old ‘GrandMaker’ Celia Dennis to lead a master class in crocheting at Bowes Lyon Court.

Kim Caldwell, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone, said: “We were thrilled to welcome so many homeowners, local people and of course Celia to Bowes Lyon Court for our ‘GrandMaker event’. The day proved to be a fitting celebration of accomplished older craftspeople and the skills they are able to pass on to younger generations.

“Following on from Celia’s successful appearance at Royal Voluntary Service’s national ‘GrandFest’ event, we were very grateful to her for sharing her craft here in Poundbury and for making our event a success with a fun and informative workshop on crocheting. All the guests had a wonderful day.”

Celia, 73 from West Sussex, has had an interest in crocheting since she was a little girl, originally learning how to crochet sitting on her grandmother’s knee. Celia has been crocheting several times a week ever since.  She now makes dresses and jumpers for children, including her own nieces and nephews.

Commenting on her status as a GrandMaker, Celia said: “It was my pleasure to visit McCarthy and Stone’s Bowes Lyon Court development and to give guests the opportunity to find out more about crocheting or to pick up a new skill.  I get so much pleasure from practicing my craft and it is wonderful to be in the position of passing this on to others.”

Now over 60 percent sold, Bowes Lyon Court consists of 62 stunning one and two bedroom apartments aimed exclusively at the over-70s. Homeowners are able to retain their independence in the form of homeownership, but with the comfort of knowing that when they need a little extra support, it’s ready and waiting.
