After spending many years travelling the globe for work and play, 77 year old retiree Sheila Groves is making the most of new-found friendships a little closer to home, after moving to McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living Plus Development in Guildford, The Clockhouse.

Former professional dancer, Sheila, who has a love of ballroom, tap and ballet, has been on quite a journey. Having performed across the UK in places such as Plymouth and Blackpool, and travelled the world, Sheila has lived in America, Greece and Paris. She eventually settled back in the UK, before making the move to Guildford to enjoy her retirement.

Sheila, who has a son and daughter, moved into The Clockhouse in March. She commented: “Living alone in a large four-bedroom property was becoming increasingly lonely. I really wanted some company on my doorstep – to be surrounded by people just like me, at my stage of life – which is why I thought The Clockhouse would be perfect.

“I lived in Guildford previously for more than 20 years, so I know the area well and my family aren’t too far away.  I settled into my new home right away.”

Designed exclusively for the over 70s, The Clockhouse comprises a selection of 50 one and two bedroom privately-owned apartments; and homeowners can benefit from access to a little extra support if required.

Life at The Clockhouse comes with all the advantages of being surrounded by like-minded individuals, with social spaces such as the homeowners’ lounge, bistro and the landscaped gardens making it easy for new connections and a strong sense of community to form.

Despite having lived at the development for just a short time, Sheila is making the most of the thriving social scene at The Clockhouse and has forged great friendships with other homeowners.

Talking about her new-found social life at the development, Sheila said: “I can honestly say that moving to The Clockhouse has completely changed my life – I’ve made fantastic new friends and I haven’t once felt lonely since moving in. Everyone at the development has been so warm and welcoming, and there’s always someone to chat to in the homeowners’ lounge – often over a nice bottle of wine!”

Understanding the importance of both independence and companionship in later years, McCarthy and Stone organises over 40,000 social activities every year for its homeowners up and down the country with at least three organised activities per development each week.

Sheila, said: “There’s always something going on at The Clockhouse, whether it’s the weekly coffee morning, a movie night or a birthday celebration, and I always try to get involved when I can. I now have the perfect balance of a private life and a social life, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Georgina Akers, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone South East, said: “It's an incredibly rewarding part of our job when we hear how happy our homeowners are, so it's great to hear that Sheila is enjoying her new surroundings and is feeling at home at The Clockhouse.

“McCarthy and Stone aims to help retirees stay independent for longer and make the most of their retirement, which Sheila certainly demonstrates. For many homeowners, Retirement Living Plus is the perfect solution, as it offers the independence of home ownership combined with the opportunity to be part of a thriving active community.”

At The Clockhouse, homeowners can relax knowing all external maintenance is taken care of; and they can have friends or relatives to stay over when they wish in the convenient guest suite.  An Estates Manager is on hand to provide any help or support as needed; while a security entrance system and emergency call points will provide added peace-of-mind for homeowners and their families.
