Elspeth buys off-plan to make her move into retirement living

14 September 2017

Elspeth Fleming, aged 69 and a retired teacher, is enjoying life following her move into retirement living following the off-plan purchase of her apartment from the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder McCarthy and Stone.

Whilst daunting for some, she has found the process to be stress-free and easy which has left her feeling very excited at the start of her new life at Jameson Gate in Portobello, Edinburgh.

Buying off-plan was an efficient and informative way to buy her apartment, as Elspeth explains: “The sales consultant Michelle was brilliant.  She came to the meeting in my home fully armed with a detailed plan of the development and the individual apartments.

“McCarthy and Stone has a great reputation for quality and their apartments are really popular so I felt very comfortable trusting them with my move.  The plan that Michelle showed me was amazing, and we discussed every possible detail around both the apartment and the development.

“Whilst there was an opportunity to visit any of the local McCarthy and Stone show apartments, I really didn’t feel that I needed to do that because I was so comfortable with the quality of the information that I’d received.

“And of course the team at McCarthy and Stone said they would make the whole process for me really easy and they’ve done just that.  So in the end, to get my apartment in Portobello in such a sought-after location with every amenity you can think of, including the fabulous beach on my doorstep, was a really easy decision for me.  In fact, I feel that buying off-plan has been just as helpful and efficient as going into a show office.”

Deciding on the right time to move is often the part that holds buyers up in their decision to move to retirement living.  However, Elspeth is an advocate of being ahead of the curve as she adds: “I’d been thinking about moving to a retirement style development because I wanted to make the move before I needed to make the move, even though I’ve got lots of friends and a busy, active life.  Some of my friends were surprised by my decision but they’ve since come round to the idea.

“I liked the thought of living in a place where everyone is of a similar age and fairly like-minded, and where you can be as much a part of that local community as you want to be.  In a modern apartment development or a tenement, you often don’t know your neighbours, and you have little in common with them. I can’t wait for this relaxed lifestyle where I just know that everyone is going to be friendly and I can be part of the community.”

Making the move into retirement living gives Elspeth the perfect platform to carry on living life to the full. She has lots of friends nearby, takes trips to the gym next door, and has peace of mind to be able to lock up and leave her apartment as she continues her travels across Europe watching various tennis championships.  Elspeth explains more: “It’s going to be wonderful to be able to just step out from my apartment and simply not worry.  Having the security of knowing that your apartment will be exactly as you left it is a reassuring factor, especially as you get older.

“Knowing there is 24-hour security means that I’ll be happy to continue travelling with friends across Europe and following my passion which is watching tennis safe in the knowledge that my little apartment is safe.
“The only nerves I’ll experience will be when I watch Andy Murray play - although I often try not to watch him play as it’s too nerve-wrecking.

“My trips are lots of fun and a very important part of my lifestyle which I’m looking forward to continuing.  And the way the development is designed with secure entrances, private apartments, carpeted hallways and a lounge to meet up with other homeowners feels to me like a little hotel with the added benefits of a friendly community.”

McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living development in Portobello has proven so popular with buyers that all of the properties available at the development have been reserved off plan. With an impressive and modern design that is within easy reach of the local facilities of Portobello itself, Jameson Gate provides a fantastic range of facilities to help homeowners enjoy every minute in their new property.

Portobello is a thriving coastal town just a few miles from Edinburgh which is packed full of shops, restaurants and independent shops.  There is also a stunning beach, a wide promenade and some of Scotland’s most breath-taking views across the Firth of Forth so buyers can enjoy independence in their retirement and enjoy the truly picturesque coastal setting of this development.

Lorraine Paterson, Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone in Scotland, comments: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the popularity of our Jameson Gate development in Portobello, and we can confirm that 100% of the development has been reserved off-plan which is an incredible endorsement of our development and demonstration of the demand for our style of retirement living apartments.

“Along with Elspeth, there are lots of excited homeowners who have already moved in, and it will be lovely to see Jameson Gate burst into life and become a vibrant and interesting community.”
