Dorchester retiree is go-ing arty to support GO Girls!

30 May 2017

Rowena Hampton, a homeowner at Bowes Lyon Court, a McCarthy and Stone Retirement Living Plus (previously Assisted Living) development in Poundbury is enjoying an active social life in a new thriving community, and has had much more time to focus on her lifelong passion, art.

A keen artist throughout her entire life, Rowena, 78, specialises in pastel portrait paintings, including pets, and is now using her talent to support a charity which is close to her heart, GO Girls. Rowena will actually be donating one of her paintings to a silent auction at Rymer’s Rally on 4th June to raise vital funds for the charity which supports women with gynaecological cancers.

Rowena commented: “I wanted to do something for women who suffer from gynaecological cancers. For much of my early life, I struggled with gynaecological problems, and whilst I’ve never had a gynaecological cancer, it’s great to see a group as active as the GO Girls supporting these women, so why would I not want to do this?”

Hilary Maxwell, Chair of GO Girls and Gynae-oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist at Dorset County Hospital said: “Art has been a great therapy for many of our GO Girls, so it’s very special to be given a painting to auction. Our girls find art very calming – often when treatments are tough going, art has been a great outlet – whether to admire or just have a dabble, so this is a real treat to know that the sale of this painting will go towards helping to support our campaign to raise £25,000 towards our counselling suite for the Cancer Appeal.”

Teresa Wolff, Vice Chair of GO Girls added: “We will be auctioning this at the Symonds & Sampson silent auction on 4th June – so if you want to bid for it and have a great day at the same time, you’ll want to be at the charity vintage tractor rally”.

Staff at Bowes Lyon Court have also recognised Rowena’s passion and to help her creativity flourish have given her use of the light and spacious library room to paint, and to keep her easel. Art classes are held at the development for homeowners once a fortnight, which Rowena regularly attends and enjoys passing on her knowledge and guidance to fellow homeowners.

Later this year, Rowena also hopes to run an art afternoon for the GO Girls – to introduce them to new skills in a medium they may not have used before.

In addition, staff and homeowners recently asked Rowena to paint a portrait of Bowes Lyon Court Duty Manager, Jasmine Pearson, as a surprise wedding present. Rowena had just one small photo of Jasmine to create the painting, which she spent over ten hours on. All the homeowners and staff came together to present Jasmine with the stunning painting, ahead of her wedding day.

Now at the heart of the close-knit community at Bowes Lyon Court, Rowena explained how happy she is: “I viewed the development with my daughters and son-in-law, and was shown a south-facing one bedroom apartment, which I was immediately taken by. I was impressed with the beautiful décor and wide-range of facilities, and was delighted I would be able to bring my 13 year old cat with me. I really enjoy being part of the active community here, and everyone has been so friendly and welcoming. I’ve always been a socialable person, so it’s lovely that there are always other people around and lots of activities to get involved in, like the coffee mornings, film nights, and of course, the art classes.”

Kim Caldwell, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone Southern, comments: “We are thrilled to hear Mrs Hampton is enjoying her new home and using her passion for art to help support such a great cause – we’re really proud of Rowena.”

Bowes Lyon Court consists of 62 stunning one and two bedroom apartments designed exclusively for the over 70s.
