Devizes history brought to life for local retirees

16 April 2019

Local retirees have been treated to a special ‘Journey Through Time’ event that explored Devizes’ rich medieval history, at McCarthy and Stone’s Shackleton Place Retirement Living Plus Development on Bath Road.

Renowned local historian, Nick Baxter – also known as ‘Wiltshire History Man’ - joined homeowners and staff at Shackleton Place for an exclusive virtual walking tour of Devizes.  The ‘walk’ explored the wealth of history and architectural heritage in the town, including the Market Place, St John’s Street, St John’s churchyard, The Brittox, and part of New Park Street.

Laura Stewart, Sales Consultant at Shackleton Place, said: “Devizes is a town steeped in history dating back to Norman times and - with over 500 listed buildings - welcomes hundreds of tourists each year.  Nick Baxter’s walking tours are fascinating, and all attendees enjoyed the event – we all learned something new about Devizes without having to leave our seats!”

The event also provided the perfect opportunity for visitors to meet the friendly community at Shackleton Place and take a tour of the development, which includes stylish one and two bedroom show apartments.  They were also able speak to the experienced sales team and ask any questions they may have about making a downsizing move to Shackleton Place.

As a Retirement Living Plus development, Shackleton Place provides an ideal downsizing option for retirees aged 70 and over.  Bridging the gap between conventional retirement living and residential care, an Estates Manager and experienced team are on hand day and night to oversee the running of the development, and to provide tailored support packages to suit individual needs.

The development features a large social lounge - perfect for getting to know new neighbours - an on-site bistro - which serves fresh and nutritious meal options for homeowners every day - and a handy guest suite for when family and friends come to stay.

The Retirement Living Plus apartments at Shackleton Place also include fully-fitted modern kitchens with integrated appliances, underfloor heating, spacious and open-plan living areas, and stylish en-suite bathrooms.  All apartments are also equipped with a 24-hour emergency call system for added peace-of-mind.

Prices for the privately-owned one and two bedroom apartments at Shackleton Place currently start from £239,000 and £299,000 respectively.

Situated in the popular medieval town of Devizes, Shackleton Place is the ideal location for those who are looking for a peaceful retirement, without having to compromise on local amenities. Good transport links provide easy accessibility for homeowners looking to explore the stunning Salisbury plain, or enjoy a day out in any one of the nearby surrounding towns including Salisbury, Chippenham, Bath, Melksham and Trowbridge.

More than 90 percent of customers would recommend McCarthy and Stone to a friend, ensuring it has received the maximum Five Star award for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders Federation for 14 years’ running.  It is the only UK housebuilder of any size or type to achieve this accolade for 14 years, which is every year since the awards have been running.
