Cycle challenge helps housebuilder bring £1800 donation over the line

04 October 2017

McCarthy and Stone’s North East team peddled their way to victory last week as the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder took part in a charity cycle ride and raised in excess of £1800 for older people’s charity, Royal Voluntary Service.

Thirteen employees from the York based McCarthy and Stone team, cycled a total of 143 miles from Darlington to Ilkley over a period of two days.

Inspired by recent coverage of the Tour de Yorkshire they tackled steep hills and aching limbs, passing through locations such as Pocklington, Stamford Bridge, Roundhay and Bishophill, all of which have McCarthy and Stone developments, and before crossing the finish line.

The cycle ride helped to continue celebrations for the retirement housebuilder’s 40th anniversary. In 1977, McCarthy and Stone opened its very first retirement development, paving the way for the creation of an entirely new sector of the property market.

To honour this important milestone, the award-winning housebuilder has partnered with Royal Voluntary Service in 2017, with the aim of raising over £130,000 in support of projects across the North East and the rest of the country. Having now passed this target with four months to go, McCarthy and Stone remains committed in their fundraising efforts to achieve the highest possible target for the charity, which helps older people stay active and independent by providing practical and emotional help where and when needed.

Steve Secker, Regional Managing Director for McCarthy and Stone North East, who was one of the 13 cyclists that took part in the gruelling two day challenge, said: “It was certainly tough at times but knowing that we were raising money for such a worthy cause really helped us keep going. The cycle ride was a fantastic event and we want to thank all of the sponsors who supported us to fundraise on behalf of Royal Voluntary Service, and our dedicated subcontractors who also helped by taking part in the cycle. 40 years is an incredible achievement for our business, and we believe this is testimony to the quality and attention to detail that goes into the service we provide, and all of our developments.”

McCarthy and Stone’s North East region currently has a portfolio of 20 developments selling or under construction and, due to its ongoing growth and expansion, it is gearing up to launch 12 new developments over the next financial year. Each individual development will be carefully designed to suit the requirements of older people, offering homeowners the very best in independent living within a safe and secure environment.
