Cruising to a relaxing, more social retirement at McCarthy & Stone

28 February 2018

When Surrey retirees Stuart and Shirley Trickett decided to slow down their pace of life, with a move to McCarthy & Stone’s Caesars Place development in Godalming, they were pleased to discover this meant more time to enjoy a full and active social life, and to fulfil their desire to visit far flung places.

Having both enjoyed successful careers – in the Ministry of Defence and as a chartered accountant – Stuart, 68, and Shirley, 64, were looking forward to spending more time together when they retired.

When Stuart was diagnosed with Huntingdon’s Disease in 2014, the upkeep and maintenance of their previous home fell to Shirley. When this started to become too much, it prompted the couple to consider downsizing, so they could spend more time doing the things they enjoy.

Shirley said: “We have always had a very active social life; and we both wanted the freedom to devote even more energy to the things we wanted to in our retirement years– rather than having to worry about spending time maintaining our home. When we saw the lifestyle on offer at Caesars Place, we instantly fell in love with it.”

Situated on Ockford Road, Caesars Place features 31 one and two-bedroom Retirement Living apartments, exclusively designed for people aged 60 and over. Facilities include a homeowners’ lounge, ideal for socialising with friends; beautifully landscaped gardens in which to relax; and a convenient guest suite should homeowners have friends or relatives to stay.

A dedicated House Manager takes care of the day-to-day running of the development; while a secure entry system and 24-hour emergency call points provide added peace-of-mind.

Being one of the first couples to move into the development, Stuart and Shirley have watched as an active community of like-minded people has formed around them at Caesars Place; and they have quickly immersed themselves into the social aspects of life at the development.

There have been plenty of opportunities to meet up with other homeowners, including Cheese & Wine evenings, a Pancake and Prosecco night on Shrove Tuesday, and a Valentine’s Day meal at the local pub. There are even weekly Tai Chi classes – something Stuart and Shirley had never tried before, but are now firm fans of.

Shirley added: “Before moving into our home at Caesars Place, I hadn’t considered taking up Tai Chi, but it has been a great form of exercise for Stuart and I, and we really enjoy it. We have found the time we would have spent on cleaning and maintaining our house is now being taken up by our personal hobbies, which include Stuart’s love of fishing and my passion for travelling. In fact, we’ve always had a taste for travelling having lived in Hong Kong for five years, and we’re now planning our first ever cruise together!”

Georgina Akers, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone South East, said:  “It's an incredibly rewarding part of our job when we hear how happy our homeowners are, so it's great to hear Mr and Mrs Trickett are enjoying their new surroundings and are feeling at home at Caesars Place.

“McCarthy and Stone aims to help retirees stay independent for longer and make the most of their retirement, which Mr and Mrs Trickett certainly demonstrate with their active social life. For them, Retirement Living is the perfect solution, as it offers the independence of home ownership combined with the opportunity to benefit from companionship when desired.”

Homeowners at Caesars Place benefit from being within walking distance of Godalming High Street and train station. There are also excellent transport links to Guildford, London Waterloo and Portsmouth.
