Construction Starts at McCarthy & Stone’s Flagship Cumbrian Development
19 April 2013
McCarthy & Stone, the UK’s leading retirement builder, has started construction work on 36 new Later Living properties in Kirkby Lonsdale, which when complete will offer the very latest in architectural design tailored specifically towards those in later life.
The new development, located on Tram Lane, marks a design-milestone for McCarthy & Stone, being the first site entirely constructed to the recommendations made in the Housing our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation (HAPPI) Report, published in 2009.
Advising that age-specific housing in the future needs to not only offer the utmost quality in both build and environment, HAPPI also challenged the generational shift in the perception of aging by endorsing more conceptual design-led properties that harness a shared sense of purpose and provide greater space, light and accessibility.
Fiona Brooks, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy & Stone, commented: “As life expectancy continues to increase, the need for adequate housing for those in later life is becoming even more important. There are currently more people over state pension age in Britain than there are children, and McCarthy & Stone believes that more focus needs to be put on creating accommodation that will better address the needs of a rapidly ageing population.
“The innovative design of these apartments does just that. By taking into consideration the very latest architectural concepts from across Europe, we have devised a cutting-edge housing solution which will cater effectively for the evolving requirements of those in later life, whilst celebrating the wisdom and freedom that the aging process should encompass. We are really excited to finally be bringing this development to life, and can’t wait to share our vision with the wider Cumbrian community.”
Comprising a mix of one and two bedroom apartments exclusively for the over 60s, the pioneering design of the Kirkby Lonsdale development also offers a central atrium and inner vistas which both create the illusion of light and encourage communal interaction. The apartments themselves will each benefit from walk-in wardrobes and an accessible balcony that brings the outdoors inside, while retractable walls will enable purchasers to make the most of the living space.
Enjoying an enviable location close to the heart of the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Park, the purpose built apartments in Kirkby Lonsdale have been designed specifically to help those aged over 60 make the most of later life.
Offering the independence of retaining home ownership while living in an environment tailored to the needs of those reaching their later years, Later Living at Kirkby Lonsdale will be low-maintenance and provide the ideal option for those looking to downsize. With reduced property maintenance, Retirement Living provides more time for people to embrace the possibilities of later life. The state of the art safety and security features, and a range of communal areas and facilities, mean greater peace of mind and companionship.
