Bridgwater locals awarded for treasured snaps of the town

01 December 2017

After judging a great selection of photographs of Bridgwater and its historical events, McCarthy and Stone, the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, has announced the winner of its local history photography competition.

As part of its ongoing commitment to engaging with the community surrounding its Retirement Living complex, Blake Court, and to commemorate McCarthy and Stone’s 40th anniversary, the specialist developer appealed to local people to dig out their old photographs which celebrated Bridgwater and its rich history.

The competition was judged by the McCarthy and Stone team at Blake Court, with the help of local historian, Joyce Hurford, at a Cheese and Wine event held at the development on Northgate.

With the quality of entries so high, the judging process was tough, and two winners were eventually selected.  Mr Peak, a homeowner at Blake Court, was named as a joint winner for his image of the 1913 Bridgwater Carnival featuring 12 of Napoleon’s soldiers, which fascinated local historian Joyce.

Visitor to the event, Mr Harding, was also selected as a winner for his atmospheric image of Bridgwater’s frozen River Parrett.

McCarthy and Stone Marketing Executive, Kane Rich, said: “We were delighted by the response to our competition, and after a tough evening of judging, we were pleased to select both Mr Peak and Mr Harding. The standard of entries were outstanding; and the competition provided great inspiration and bought back many memories for those that attended this fascinating evening which captured the incredible history and landscape of their town.”

Designed exclusively for the over 60s, McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living developments offer homeowners the very best in independent living within a safe and secure environment, with the opportunity to benefit from companionship when desired, as well as privacy when needed.

Situated on Northgate in Bridgwater, Blake Court features a Homeowners’ lounge, ideal for socialising with friends; and beautiful gardens where homeowners can relax, knowing all maintenance is taken care of. They can also feel secure in the knowledge the House Manager is on hand to provide any help or support should they need it; and that friends and family can stay over whenever they choose in the development’s comfortable guest suite.
