Boost for local charity, Ilkley & District Good Neighbours

28 July 2017

Local charity, Ilkley & District Good Neighbours, has received a £500 donation from UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, McCarthy and Stone, who are currently building a dual retirement development on Railway Road in Ilkley.

The money is to help the charity’s ongoing work in the Ilkley area, befriending vulnerable members of the community and offering free, practical assistance where needed such as taking them to do their weekly shop, assisting with small home maintenance jobs such as fitting light bulbs, light gardening and decorating.

The charity, which was first set up in the 1970s, comprises a team of local volunteers and is largely self-funded, apart from the ‘Befriending Service’ which receives some funding from Bradford Council. It also provides social support via excursions, Christmas parcels delivered to over 100 residents, and a special ‘Over 90s party’ attended by local people who have achieved the grand age of 90.

Judy Hutton, Chairman of Ilkley & District Good Neighbours, commented: “Ilkley & District Good Neighbours is extremely grateful to McCarthy and Stone for this donation which will help us continue our valuable work supporting older people living independently in Ilkley.  We are constantly looking for ways to collaborate with local businesses and we are delighted to be associated with a leading retirement housebuilder.

“We are assisted in our work by a team of magnificent volunteers from all walks of life and by a number of local voluntary groups together with pupils from Ilkley Grammar School and young people from the Air Cadets. It is a cliché, but we literally would not exist without our volunteers, and we are so grateful for all their time and efforts.”

Liz Green, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone North East, added: “As a company, we appreciate that our responsibility is not only to build quality, purpose-built retirement properties, but also to create a positive legacy in the communities in which we build. Ilkley & District Good Neighbours do such a superb job in the area and we are delighted to be able to donate to such a worthy cause.”

Construction at McCarthy and Stone’s planned dual retirement development, Scholars Place, is now well underway. As the only McCarthy and Stone development of its kind in the region, the luxury apartments on Railway Road have already been attracting a high level of interest in the area.

Scholars Place is home to two stunning developments of spacious one and two bedroom apartments specifically designed to suit all lifestyles and stages of retirement.

Priestley Court, exclusive to people aged 60 and over, offers a selection of beautiful apartments where homeowners can enjoy the new found freedom of owning a low maintenance property with the additional benefit of security and the option of companionship if they choose. Chesterton Court, exclusive to people aged 70 and over, offers all the features of a standard Retirement Living development but with peace of mind that a little extra help is on hand if needed.
