Bob the bus receives a boost from McCarthy & Stone

10 July 2017

Award-winning retirement housebuilder, McCarthy and Stone, has pledged its support for Bob the Bus, a scheme run by Totnes Rural and Community Transport.

The leading developer has donated £500 to help fund the charity’s fantastic work. Since its pilot in 1997, Bob the Bus has become one of country’s most successful community transport schemes.  Operating with the aim of addressing the transport needs of local people, the scheme has a fleet of three buses, and it relies on a team of 38 dedicated volunteer drivers to provide shuttle services for people of all ages in the community – from school children to retirees.

Simon Harrington, Chair of Totnes Rural and Community Transport Scheme, commented: “We are very grateful to McCarthy and Stone for their gesture of support.  Contributions of this kind are extremely important to us. We are completely self-funded, so without the generosity of donors, we would not be able to carry out the wonderful work we do in and around Totnes.”

Simon Mantell, Regional Managing Director for McCarthy and Stone South West, said: “As a company, we appreciate that our responsibility is not only to deliver quality, purpose-built retirement properties, but also to create a positive legacy in the communities in which we build.

“When we were looking for a charity for the South West regional office to support, Bob the Bus stood out for the positive role it plays in the lives of so many people. Insufficient access to transport is an issue across in the region, particularly for older people, so we are delighted to be able to donate to such a worthy cause.”

McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living developments offer all the independence of retaining home ownership while living in an apartment specifically designed for the over-60s – a proposition which gives homeowners the opportunity to benefit from companionship when desired, as well as privacy when needed.  Developments feature a homeowners’ lounge, landscaped gardens, and a guest suite to accommodate visiting friends and family.  A House Manager is on hand to take care of the smooth running of the development and to provide support to homeowners as required.

McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living Plus developments offer all this but are designed exclusively for the over 70s, and those who require some added support. With the emphasis still on enjoying an independent retirement, homeowners have the added peace-of-mind of a range of additional 24/7 security and flexible care and support services, which make life that little bit easier

Simon added: “McCarthy and Stone was recently been awarded a five star customer satisfaction rating from the Home Builders Federation for the 12th year running; and it is this commitment to quality across everything we do that has shaped the vision for our growth across the  South West.”
