Midlands - Regional retirement awards winner
19 July 2012
A retiree from Milton Keynes has been named as one of the most extraordinary retired people in the UK, having scooped a prize for his commitment to charity during the regional finals of the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, McCarthy & Stone’s, National Retirement Awards.
Alfred Bolton from Milton Keynes battled stiff competition from fellow nominees to be announced as the Midlands regional champion in the category designed to honour those who give up their own time to help others.
At a regional judging event held earlier this week at McCarthy & Stone’s Poppy Court development in Sutton Coldfield, the retiree managed to impress judges with tales of his time during the Second World War where he served as a Royal Navy Sailor on HMS Warspite. Now, at the age of 93, Alf spends a lot of his free time fundraising and raised £1,784 for the British Legion Poppy Appeal in 2011.
Following his win, Alf will go on to take part in the national competition later this year against a host of other regional finalists from across the UK.
“We have had the pleasure of meeting some truly amazing individuals throughout the judging process and it was a very difficult task to whittle them down to our few final category winners,” commented Richard Williams, regional managing director for McCarthy & Stone. “However, Alf proved to be a real inspiration and all the judges felt that he deserved to be recognised for his incredible achievements. We wish him all the very best in the national finals.”
The National Retirement Awards are aimed at honouring individuals or groups of people aged 60 or over, who have done something worthy of recognition, excelled in their field or have gone all out to help their local community. The winners of the regional finals will go through to the national finals, where overall winners for each category will be decided by a judging panel that includes former Olympic champion Dame Mary Peters DBE.
The national winner in each individual category will scoop a prize of £1,000 while the nominee named as the “National Retirement Awards Overall Winner” will be presented with a cheque for £5,000.
