Assisted Living (Extra Care) apartments given the go-ahead

21 September 2015

Following extensive consultation with the local community, McCarthy and Stone, the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, is pleased that its proposal to develop the G&J Peck site, Lisle Lane, Ely with 57 high-quality Assisted Living (Extra Care) apartments, car parking and attractive landscaping, has been granted planning permission by East Cambridge District Council.

McCarthy and Stone’s proposal will help meet the local need for specialist housing for older people, significantly increasing local housing choice. Assisted Living (Extra Care) apartments are staffed 24hrs a day, which will create 17 full-time equivalent jobs and provide residents with access to care and domestic assistance as required.

The approved plans received a high level of local support. Nearly 100 residents attended McCarthy and Stone’s public exhibition in April 2015 and 91% of the feedback received during the pre-application consultation supported the proposals, particularly in relation to:

  • the strong local need for specialist, owner-occupied accommodation for older people in Ely;
  • the traditional design proposed; and
  • the suitability of the proposal site for older people’s accommodation, close to shops and services.

G&J Peck is relocating to purpose built premises at the nearby Lancaster Way Business Park. McCarthy and Stone hope to start construction on site in Summer 2016. Once construction has commenced the proposal will take approximately 16 months to complete.

Mark Wright, McCarthy and Stone’s Regional Managing Director, commented:

“From the outset we have been committed to delivering the right development for this site. We are delighted with this decision and are pleased that our plans received the support of local residents. We can now proceed to develop this site with much-needed Assisted Living accommodation for local older people.”
