A Day In The Life of a McCarthy and Stone Estates Manager

27 August 2019

Behind the scenes at McCarthy and Stone's developments across the UK are the people who spend their time ensuring each homeowner is happy and safe. Mark Kirby, Estates Manager at McCarthy and Stone’s Rutherford House Retirement Living Plus Development in Chalfont St Peter, gives an insight into his daily life at the development on Marple Lane.

Talking about what happens in a typical day as a McCarthy and Stone Estates Manager, Mark said: “Overseeing the running of the development is my primary role, as well as making sure all of the homeowners are safe, well and happy. There is a lovely community of homeowners here at Rutherford House, with everyone having the chance to settle in and get to know each other properly.

“We have lots of social activities going on at Rutherford House, including the likes of a mindfulness club on a Monday, exercise group on Tuesday, Wednesday coffee morning, Wednesday quiz nights and  a monthly film night.  There’s always something going on.  One of our homeowners is also starting a book club next week.”

Over the last 12 months, 33,500 social events were held across McCarthy and Stone's managed properties, ranging from coffee mornings and regular activities for homeowners, to bigger events involving the local community.

Mark said: “Having worked in care services for the past eight years, I was determined to give something back to those who have helped myself, family and friends in the past. The reassurance and peace-of-mind that we can offer to families is invaluable, knowing that their relatives are living in a community where they can have privacy when needed and companionship when desired.”

McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living Plus developments offer the over 70s the opportunity to enjoy an independent lifestyle, while having access to tailored domestic and personal assistance packages to help them manage their day-to-day lives.

When asked about the favourite thing about his job, Mark said:  “I love the relationships I have built with the homeowners. It’s great to be there for them to assist with anything they need, big or small, and all the little things in between. It’s like an extended family of mine.

“Sometimes the homeowners just need a listening ear and they will frequently stop by the office for a chat. There are very few developments that offer the level of management McCarthy and Stone provides here; and, because of that, living at Rutherford House helps homeowners to enjoy their retirement years to the full.  It is more than a home; it is a community.”

Comprising a selection of 39 one and two bedroom Retirement Living Plus apartments, exclusively designed for people aged 70 and over, Rutherford House provides everything people in Chalfont St Peter could want for a relaxing retirement.

Mark added:  “My job is special because it varies so much. Everyone is so pleasant and helpful. We are like a team – the homeowners want to be together and that makes the place feel very special indeed.”

Facilities at Rutherford House include a stylish Club Lounge, ideal for socialising; beautiful landscaped gardens and a patio area in which to relax; and a Guest Suite, which provides a comfortable stay for visiting family and friends.  A dedicated Estates Manager takes care of the day-to-day running of the development; and CCTV, electronic gates and a security entrance system and 24-hour emergency call points provide added peace-of-mind.

Located within half a mile of the town’s high street, Rutherford House boasts views of Goldhill Common, while also being within walking distance of many local amenities including shops, cafes and restaurants.
