Chelmsford development honours local history with art installation

19 July 2019

The UK’s leading developer and manager of retirement communities, McCarthy and Stone, has honoured local history at its Miami House Retirement Living Plus development in Chelmsford, working with local artist Dale Devereux Barker to create an artwork series in homage to the community.

Dale Devereux Barker is a Suffolk printmaker, specialising in reduction linocuts and screen-prints. His work combines a celebration of colour and form to transform everyday events into images loaded with humour and feeling.

The new artwork is positioned on the exterior of Miami House – at the main entrance to the retirement community. The design, which comprises of six panels, brings a series of photographic sources from the Essex Records archive back into use and pays tribute to the people of Chelmsford.

Dale Devereux Barker said: “I was delighted when McCarthy and Stone commissioned the artwork for the exterior of their new Miami House development on Princes Road.

“The artwork references the history of the people of Chelmsford, giving a colourful interpretation of the rich photographic sources from the Essex Records Office archive. Made from vitreous enamel, the panels complement the contemporary architectural design of this new building as well as appealing to both homeowners and passers-by.

“The artworks operate on two distinct visual perspectives, from a distance as decorative colourful additions to the building, but on closer inspection, offering an historical reminder to the backdrop of the area.”

Simon Pendlebury, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone North London, commented: “We’re really pleased to honour the history of Chelmsford at Miami House with such outstanding designs. The art celebrates the building, its history and its importance as a place where people live and meet, and we offer our thanks to Dale Devereux Barker who dedicated his time to designing such iconic pieces for the local community.”
