BBC Documentary comes of age in Horwich

05 July 2012

A BBC One documentary shot on site at retirement specialist, McCarthy & Stone’s forthcoming Rockhaven Court development in Horwich, will address the issues faced by older people working well into later life in the North West.

As the area in the UK identified to have the highest number of older people still in regular employment, ‘Town that Never Retired’ will follow local pensioners as they head back to full-time employment at the construction site on Chorley New Road, and compare their progress against that of a number of much-younger apprentices.

Part of the BBC’s new ‘When I’m 65’ season, the two part programme, which starts on Wednesday 11th June at 9pm, will see Nick Hewer and Margaret Mountford of ‘The Apprentice’ fame reunite in Horwich to see whether retirees in the region still have what it takes to compete against younger employees and whilst challenging their preconceptions about the elderly.

Bolton based McCarthy & Stone site manager, Gary Ashworth, who viewers will see working alongside both the retirees and their younger compatriots, said of the experience: “All of the older guys had incredible attitudes to work. They turned up on time, approached each task with skill and enthusiasm, and to be honest, you couldn’t tell them apart from our core team. Personally, I’m proud to have been given the opportunity to work with some fantastic men, who really showcase the grit, determination and independence of the older generation in Horwich.”

Throughout the series, viewers will also see retirees sent back to work in a chocolate factory, restaurant, health clinic and estate agency, with the five employers then having to choose whether they're prepared to keep any of the workers on for a second week.

McCarthy & Stone Regional Managing Director, Steve Secker, added: “We often talk about the benefits of remaining active in later life, and for us this experience and has proven just that.

“Although many of the older workers did admit that they wouldn’t be happy working full-time at this point their point in lives, it was a pleasure to see them get so involved and do such a terrific job. I hope this series will show how age is not a barrier to living a fulfilling life, and that those in their later years should be appreciated for everything they have to offer, regardless of age.”

With over 30 years experience in the later living sector, McCarthy & Stone currently has nearly 150 selling developments across the UK, each of which is designed to promote the enjoyment of  active and hassle-free lifestyles.
