In this second part of our Guide To Retirement, property owners, Cecilia Smith and Jean Ryder, both 64 live at Charlotte Court, Ainsdale, Southport and Grove Court, Crosby, Merseyside. Here, they tell us why moving to a Retirement Living development has transformed their lives for the better.

Retirement Living

When Jean Ryder asked her best friends, Cecilia and Jim Smith, to join her on a speculative visit to Grove Court they were so impressed with what they saw they decided to buy an apartment too.
The Smiths plumped for nearby Charlotte Court. ‘Within days we were all excitedly setting out on the next stage of our lives,’ says Jean. ‘I felt sad leaving my family home of 50 years. But it was too big and I needed help with the housework  and gardening. It was time  to downsize.’
Now, Jean only wishes she’d made the move sooner.  ‘I love it here. It’s like living in  a luxurious hotel where all the maintenance is taken care of.'

Jean also enjoys socialising with her neighbours. ‘We have  a coffee morning each week, which is where we catch up. There’s always something going on in the homeowners’ lounge – but you don’t feel under pressure to join in.’

Cecilia says looking around Grove Court with Jean, her friend since they worked together as trainee hairdressers 50 years ago, provided a light bulb moment.

‘Jim and I also had a big  home that was getting too much for us,’ she explains. ‘Seeing the lifestyle being offered was inspiring.

‘Since moving here we haven’t looked back. Our house manager is marvellous – nothing’s too much trouble. And our neighbours are all lovely. We enjoy film nights  and fish and chip suppers  in the homeowners’ lounge. The coffee mornings are always fun. It’s the best move we could have made.’
