Feet Up: Our Top Christmas TV Picks

We believe that there's nothing better than snuggling up under the warming glow of fairy lights and the Christmas tree, with a seasonal drink in hand in front of the TV.

With the weather turning colder, and the festive feeling starting to grow, the build up to Christmas day itself can be the best part.

This year there’s plenty of great TV to be watched this Christmas time. With more being added to the Christmas schedule daily, including specials of our favourite shows, adaptations, comedies and more, there certainly is something for every member of the family to enjoy. 

We’ve put together a list of the upcoming shows to keep an eye out to watch over the holiday season. So, put your feet up, grab a drink and settle down to watch a good old box set or new TV show. 

Gavin & Stacey

The highly anticipated Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special sees the return of the much-loved cast as they’re back for a one-hour special. With no plot details yet, and only the confirmation that fans will get ‘everything they want’ it’s certainly one not to miss! Airs: Christmas Day at 8:30pm 

Christmas Carol

A new three-part drama of a Christmas Carol will see a unique and original take on Charles Dickens’ iconic ghost story and a haunting, hallucinatory, spine-tingling immersion into Scrooge’s dark night of the soul. Airs: 22nd-24th December at 9pm.

Worzel Gummidge

Another classic sitcom has had a reboot, Worzel Gummidge who comes to life and befriends the local children. This adaption will follow the story of lively scarecrow Worzel Gummidge as he comes to life and gains the trust of local children Susan and John. Airs: Boxing Day at 6:20pm, 27th December at 7pm.

The Snail and The Whale

If you’ve got grandchildren over the holidays, one of Julia Donaldson’s classic children’s books, ‘The Snail and The Whale’ has been adapted for the screen. Following the story of a tiny snail who longs to see the world and ends up hitching a ride on the trail of a humpback whale will be on BBC One. Perfect for you to enjoy with your grandchildren! Airs: Christmas Day at 2:30pm.

Call the Midwife

The beloved Call the Midwife season 9 will be back on our scenes for a Christmas special. This season follows the midwives as they venture to the Outer Hebrides to a small community who need medical health care. Airs: Christmas Day at 7pm.

Strictly Come Dancing

It is hard to image Christmas day without Strictly Come Dancing. This year, Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman return for another spectacular show. Many recognisable faces dance it off to take home the special Christmas trophy. Airs: Christmas Day at 4:40pm.

The Trial of Christine Keeler

BBC One sees a highly-anticipated series, The Trial of Christine Keeler, on the scandalous Profumo Affair in 1963. This drama will go behind the headlines of the story to tell the human side, beneath the very public scandal. Airs: 29th-30th December at 9pm.

Sticks and Stones

If you’re a Doctor Foster or Trauma fan, you won’t want to miss ITV’s new series, Sticks and Stones. The story is based on workplace bullying and is set in the middle management of a company. A hard-working father freezes up during a pitch with the results leaving a wide-ranging fall-out. Airs: 16th December at 9pm.

Of course, there will be many Christmas specials including all the soaps and comedies you love. From Mrs Brown’s Boys, to Still Open All Hours, there will be plenty to keep watching in front of the fire with your drink and snacks in hand.
