Calling The Nation's Grandkids: Help Us Compile The 'Ultimate Guide To Grandparenting'

What makes a 'good' grandparent?

To celebrate National Grandparents’ Day on Sunday 4 October, we need as many of you as possible to tell us what you think makes a great grandparent.

The best memories and stories will be included in our ‘Ultimate Guide to Grandparenting’, whilst anyone who sends in a suggestion will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win £250 worth of John Lewis vouchers, with three runners-up receiving a £50 Waitrose food voucher.

Your top tip could be something your own grandparents taught you - an attitude to life, a secret family recipe, or how to get away with cheating at monopoly!

Maybe you’ve learnt from a mischievous gran or grandpa who let you spend your days devouring doughnuts, laughing at rude jokes, and staying up late – all away from the watchful eyes of your parents! Or perhaps they used to slip you some extra pocket money, let you have chocolate cake for breakfast or told you secrets you weren’t allowed to tell your mum or dad. No matter the memory or tip, we want to hear from you!

As we enter the new-age of technology, we also want to hear from grandchildren of all ages on what they think on-trend grandmas and grandpas desperately need to know in the 21st century.

Is it how to play Candy Crush, how to take a selfie, or the words to One Direction’s latest chart-topping hit? How can we help grandparents to keep-up with their grandchildren?!

Once all the suggestions are in we will compile the ‘Ultimate Guide to Grandparenting’, including a downloadable checklist of memory-making activities for every grandparent to do with their grandkids, such as building a den or flying a kite, and which they can tick off as they go.

We want to inspire grandparents and their grandchildren to try something new and spend valuable, quality time together this National Grandparents’ Day.

As part of the guide, we’ll also include a handy section on the ‘20 Things Grandchildren think their Grandparents Ought to Know in the 21st Century’, such as how to upload photos to Facebook, or finding funny videos on YouTube.

Grandad & Grandson in the park

National Grandparents’ Day is a great way to share memories and show how fondly we all think of our grandparents. Not only do our grandparents take an active interest in their grandchildren’s lives and interests, but they also pass on valuable knowledge and advice, giving children a take on life that they might not otherwise get – something we at McCarthy and Stone think is really important both to cherish and celebrate.

To help us compile our ‘Ultimate Guide to Grandparenting’, please email your stories and suggestions on top memory-making activities grandparents can do with their grandchildren to:

You can also post your ideas to: McCann PR, McCarthy and Stone Ultimate Guide, Communications House, Highlands Rd, Shirley B90 4WE. The closing date to send your entries is Wednesday 7th October.

The ‘Ultimate Guide to Grandparenting’ will be available to download via the McCarthy & Stone website from Monday 19th October 2015.
