Match made in McCarthy Stone

Ian and Jean Fleming fell in love and got married, after meeting at their McCarthy Stone development,  Darroch Gate in Perthshire – here’s their heart-warming story in their own words.

Ian’s story

I was married for 58 years, unfortunately the last four years were blighted by the ill health of my wife. After my wife’s death, I decided to sell our three-bedroom cottage with a large garden and move to a flat in Darroch Gate.

I had also decided I was going on holiday to Australia. I was moving to Darroch Gate in December and planned to start my holiday at the start of February, so this holiday was, being honest, the only thing on my mind.

In January, I was walking into town when I noticed a lady coming towards me and recognised her from Darroch Gate. We introduced ourselves and stood talking for approximately 20 minutes.

A few weeks later we once again met in the town, this time rather than stand in the cold I suggested we go for a coffee and spent a couple of pleasant hours.

I then went off to Australia. It was in June that I returned to Darroch Gate after a sunny day meeting friends. There were a few people in the lounge watching tennis. I went in and joined them. Later on Jean came in and when the game finished people started to leave. Eventually Jean and I were left and got into conversation. I then asked her if I could invite her for lunch the following Sunday to which she agreed. I spent the following week wondering how to go about it as it was nearly sixty years since I’d asked a lady out!

Jean’s story

I retired at 60 from teaching ‘children with challenges’. I missed working with children, so concentrated on being with my three granddaughters. I lived in a flat in Broughty Ferry, Angus, (the next burgh up from Perthshire).

However, on visiting Blairgowrie I noticed Darroch Gate and went to view. It was much more salubrious than the Broughty Ferry one. I am a country girl at heart, who worked in cities, and this was indeed the perfect situation for me to live – on the edge of town surrounded by hills and trees - wonderful for walks and with easy to reach shops nearby. I brought a flat overlooking the garden at the back away from any traffic noise in March 2018.

I settled in well and made friends with other like-minded people at our weekly coffee mornings. I heard about Ian and his adventurous trip to Australia. He was 80 years old and backpacking (in an upmarket way) and driving as far as he could! I did meet him and stopped to ask about his travels. We got on so well that we met again for coffee. It took him some time to pluck up the courage to ask me out to dinner at a lovely local hotel. Our next visit there was to get married on the 5th Oct 2019.

We were married by Rev. Ian Knox and our best man and bridesmaid Ron and Rhona Keenen – all residents and friends of ours at Darroch gate. I am so very happy here with ‘the love of my life’, Ian!

This joyful news means that Jean is now selling her apartment

You can take a look at it here. Or search for a McCarthy Stone retirement property in your area. Who knows what might happen!
