What is a Retirement Village?

Retirement Villages are one of the newer retirement living accommodation options and are becoming popular with those who enjoy living independently, but within a self-contained and supportive community setting. They typically consist of houses and apartments set in a  ‘village style’ complex which could boast a number of private facilities including a village hall, health club, café, pub, swimming pool and even GP surgery for the residents’ convenience and enjoyment. The shared spaces and gardens will be maintained by management and extra care or domestic support may be offered for residents who need it.

The living accommodation in retirement villages is similar to sheltered housing accommodation, with security, safety and comfort all carefully considered. Residents enjoy both the benefits of an active social life, with everything they need on their doorstep, as well as the privacy of their own home.

What is the difference between a retirement village and a McCarthy & Stone development?

McCarthy and Stone offer two options for those looking to retire in comfort and security,
Retirement Living and Retirement Living PLUS. Both types of complexes consist of luxury apartments for purchase, with communal spaces including a house lounge, guest suite for visitors* and maintained gardens. Retirement Living PLUS complexes also offer table service or bistro style meals at the onsite restaurant. Both options boast comfortable apartments, with safety and security features including 24-hour alarm systems and security monitors, as well as modifications such as raised oven and plug sockets, and non-slip floor and lever taps in the bathroom.

The difference between Retirement Living and Retirement Living PLUS is the level of support offered to residents. While Retirement Living residents benefit from a house manager during office hours and a 24-hour emergency service, Retirement Living PLUS complexes have 24-hour on-site management. Retirement Living PLUS also offers additional domestic and personal care, to support homeowners in their independent living. McCarthy and Stone complexes may not be suitable for those with nursing care needs – in that case a care home which offers nursing care as well as personal care should be considered.

McCarthy and Stone homeowners will enjoy many social benefits to their living arrangement, with shared spaces for socialising in and organised activities and events. Friends and relatives can even join in if they wish!

All of our developments are located in the heart of communities, close to shops and public transport. Retirement Villages tend to be built outside of town centres.

Whichever retirement living accommodation option you’re considering for yourself or a loved one, taking the time to carefully weigh up the pros and cons is important. The right move will ensure a happy, safe and enjoyable retirement age, with many more good memories to make!
