Testimonials
My father moved into McCarthy & Stone Assisted Living when he was 81, after 45 years in his previous home. Six months and one birthday later, we could not have wished for a better outcome. Aside from lower running costs - something which would appeal to any Yorkshireman - life is much easier in his new flat. Everything is on one level, the flat is very cosy and he knows he needn't worry about maintenence or security. As a result his quality of life, and likewise his self esteem, have improved. He can safely cook and bathe, which preserves his vital sense of independence. The flat is well designed and, should Father ever become less mobile, we know he can stay where he is because that situation has been allowed for. Interestingly, the community seems to be that bit more cohesive with each week that passes. Not only do most of the residents enjoy a very good lunch together in the restaurant, but they have taken to organising events originally laid on by the staff. It is wonderful that people in their 90's take it upon themselves to become Social Secretaries! The advantages of Assisted Living become clearer by the day. Firstly, it massively reduces the chance of a resident needing to go into a home, saving both money and dignity. My mother, who went into an old people's home two years ago, is now too institutionalised to be moved. I suspect we could have avoided them being separated had Assisted Living been available to us then. Furthermore, Father was recently admitted to hospital for a week but was discharged far sooner than expected when I explained to his Consultant how the support systems work. This must bring significant gains to the NHS.
If needs be someone will do his shopping or his washing (in a laundry room so well equipped that we are tempted to take our own things there). Effectively he is in his own spacious flat on top of a five star hotel. What more could children want for their parents? Our only regret is that more people cannot enjoy their third age in such lovely surroundings. |

Indeed, the benefits extend to our whole family. We can visit Father in
his private apartment whenever we like, or relax and take holidays in
the knowledge that he has a staff and community who care for him.
