Response to the National Planning Framework. Recommendations made by McCarthy & Stone to strengthen the NPPF. The Government has recently published its draft National Planning Policy Framework for consultation. From our experience of operating across the whole of the UK, we know first-hand that the country is in the midst of a housing crisis. Housing provision for older people has not kept pace with our ageing population. The number of people aged over 65 currently stands at 10 million and is set to grow to 16.7 million by 2035. 60% of all household growth by 2035 will be by people aged over 65 – that’s 3.5 million extra households. However, the UK has built just 105,000 specialist retirement homes for owner occupation to date, significantly less than other developed countries, and we are building fewer homes now than we were in the 1980s. Without specialist housing for older people, it is also harder to release under-occupied homes for younger families to move into. Overall, the social consequences of our lack of house-building will be serious and significant. Please read our formal submission to the Government’s consultation on the Framework, which outlines both why we support the document and our recommendations on how the Framework could be strengthened further.
