New retirement apartments planned for sale in Shepton Mallet, Somerset
McCarthy & Stone pioneered the concept of private retirement housing in the UK and have retirement developments nationwide.
Retirement living from McCarthy & Stone however is so much more than just a retirement flat. It's designed to enable older retired home owners to lead an active, independent lifestyle, without many of the maintenance worries often associated with home ownership; all in a safe and secure environment.
For 3,000 years Shepton Mallet has been a hive of industry. The livelihoods of at least 120 generations have been spent in this small market town nestling in a fold of the Mendip Hills, along a narrow valley of the River Sheppey. Shepton Mallet lies on the route of the Fosse Way, the principal Roman road into the south west of England, and there is evidence of Roman settlement in the town. In medieval times, the wool trade was important in the town's economy, although this declined in the 18th century to be replaced by other industries such as brewing, the town continues to be a major centre for the production of cider. Shepton Mallet has 218 listed buildings in the town including 9 that are Grade II listed. These include Old Bowlish House which dates from the first half of the 17th century and now houses a contemporary art gallery, the Anglo Bavarian Brewery and Charlton Viaduct. The focal point of the town is Market Place where the hexagonal 50 foot market cross that dates back to 1520 and The Shambles a restored medieval market stall stands. The town benefits from a sizeable park, a gift of land from a local man, John Kyte Collett. This park, which opened in 1906, is called Collett Park in his honour. There is also a traditional High Street with a number of local and national retailers including a post office, cafe’s and Haskins Retail Centre, Somerset’s largest furniture retailer. At the Southern end of the High Street is the bus station and Townsend Retail Park, which has a large supermarket as well as a number of national retailers.Holmcroft Court located on Charlton Road is next to Shepton Mallet Leisure Centre and is conveniently located for Collett Park and the town centre. The High Street is located less than 550 metres/602 yards from Holmcroft Court, which also benefits from a bus stop located outside the development.
