New retirement apartments planned for sale in Devizes, Wiltshire.

Devizes is a charming historic market town with Norman origins that lies in the heart of Wiltshire.  The outline of the town walls shows a 'D' shape of the centre, which retains its medieval street plan.  Famous for the spectacular Caen Hill flight of 29 locks on the Kennet and Avon canal built by Rennie in the 18^th century, the town also has fine examples of Georgian architecture and a 19th century castle.  Devizes is home to the Wiltshire Heritage Museum and The Wadworth Brewery at the north end of the Market Place.  This independent brewery still makes daily local deliveries using their famous shire horses.  Tours can be taken of both the brewery and the stables.

Subject to planning the retirement homes will be located on Wharf Street, adjacent to the Kennet & Avon Canal and a flat walk from the town's shops, amenities, market and attractions.  There are excellent transport links in Devizes with regular bus services to surrounding towns and villages including Marlborough, Calne, Chippenham, Trowbridge, Melksham, Salisbury and Swindon.

The tow path from the Wharf leads to the locks where boat hire and canal trips are available in the summer.  The town centre has a number of independent and national retailers, traditional pubs, a weekly outdoor market held on a Thursday and an indoor market at the Shambles.  Festivals are held in Devizes in June and September, and there is an annual carnival in August.

Just outside the town at Roundway Down, colourful re-enactments of 17^th century battles can be enjoyed in summer.  The surrounding Wiltshire countryside is spectacular, and is home to the world famous Stonehenge and Avebury Stone Circles.

McCarthy & Stone has recently exchanged contracts on the site in Wharf Street and plans to construct 38 one and two bedroom retirement apartments which are currently subject to planning permission.

The retirement apartments will be managed by a house manager who will oversee the running of the building including maintenance of the grounds and building.  Key retirement living related features of the development will include a communal residents' lounge, a guest suite, laundry room and a lift that will provide access to all floors.
