McCarthy & Stone pioneered the concept of private retirement housing in the UK and have retirement developments nationwide.

Retirement living from McCarthy & Stone however is so much more than just a retirement flat. It's designed to enable older retired home owners to lead an active, independent lifestyle, without many of the maintenance worries often associated with home ownership; all in a safe and secure environment.

Cestrian Court retirement homes are located on Newcastle Road in Chester-le-Street, Durham.  There are 46 one and two bedroom retirement apartments, conveniently situated within 200 metres of the Chester-le-Street town centre.  Cestrian Court is on a regular bus route serving Durham, Bishop Auckland and other surrounding towns such as Washington, Stanley, Houghton-le-Spring and Framwellgate Moor.

Chester-le-Street is 7 miles south of Newcastle upon Tyne and 8 miles west of Sunderland on the River Wear.  It is a busy market town with a history going back to Roman times, and is well served by a road network with easy access to the A1.  The train station is on the East coast mainline between Newcastle and Durham, and was the original home of the Northern General Bus Company which still operates from the Picktree Lane depot.

Cestrian Court is on the north side of Chester-le-Street just 200 yards from the start of the town's main shopping area where there is a wide range of high street shops including banks, butchers, bakers and hair stylists.  Outdoor markets are held every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.  The town is home to Durham County Cricket Club which regularly plays at The Riverside Ground.  Other activities include the world famous Beamish Open Air Museum which tells the story of the people of North East England between 1825 and 1913.
