A McCarthy & Stone lifestyle offers a range of features and services that can help older people. Some have been put in place specifically to overcome the financial challenges affecting older people, as highlighted by the BBC. The BBC visited McCarthy & Stone’s Cherrett Court development in Ferndown. The CPI rate of inflation climbed to 4.5% in August, up from 4.4% in July. The headline rate of RPI inflation, which includes mortgage payments, rose to 5.2% in August from 5.0% in July.Huge increases in utility bills and the biggest hike in clothing costs on record have helped to add to the squeeze in household incomes already hit by rising food and fuel costs. Economists say the elderly face an even higher rate of inflation than young people because fast rising items, such as fuel, make up a larger share of their spending. Older people are also more adversely affected by low interest rates than younger people – as they may not have mortgages, they are not benefitting from low borrowing rates, but are more reliant on pensions and other savings, which are not currently gaining interest. McCarthy & Stone believes that wherever possible older people want to and should be allowed to live independently and are supportive of policies that enable them to do this. In line with this they have established Viewpoint 60+ a unique specialist UK-wide research panel of people aged 60+ who are invited to give their views and opinions on important issues affecting older people. |
